Today I got up at 6 o'clock, drove to the course in the dark, and missed out on a couple of hours practice for an important pool match which started at 12, to play in a competition that I wasn't eligible to win.

Why?

Because I've only played in 2 h'cap qualifying comps since getting my handicap. The club has a rule which says you must have played in 3 qualifying comps in the last 12 months in order to win anything. It's a good rule imo and I 100% agree with it.
I had asked different people (that should have known imo) if todays comp was h'cap qualifying, and been told yes.

The reason I was so keen to play my 3rd is that most of the stuff over the winter is not h'cap qualifying so I wouldn't be allowed to enter (or it would be pointless).

Anyway, I played the best I'd played since I started up playing again a few months ago, a shot a gross 75 including 3 dropped shots on the last 3 holes.

Great I thought, now qualified for comps and a cut as well :D

I looked online a few hours ago to see how much I'd been cut and it says this...

Competition Scratch Score = Non-Qualifying (Men)

Not a happy bunny

Well done on the gross 75 great scoring.

It's so annoying eh, called sods law

Put it down as a lesson learned Region3, don't take their word for it. Have you not got a club diary with all that sort of info in?

Just do it again on your 3rd card round :)

Golfmmad.

I have to say my club puts all the competitions on the noticeboard in the locker room with entry deadlines, any qualifying stipulations and tells you up front if its qualifying or not. At least we always know in advance.

Can you not ask for it to be reviewed for handicap purposes as it was played of the compe tees and the card signed

It wasn't played off comp tees, but I didn't think that would matter as the css would be accordingly lower.

It was a singles stableford, so I can't see why it shouldn't count, but I don't make the rules.

I will have a word with them to see if anything can be done, but I can't see it helping. Rules is rules and all that.

Maybe the guys I asked were guessing, and I took it as it was what I wanted to hear.

Golfmmad - I fully intend to repeat it on my 3rd card, but I don't know how far away that will be.
In the meantime I can't play in a team event I've entered next week, or the winter pairs, or any scrambles or other events that are announced between now and the next qualifying comp. :(

I forgot to say before as well that the greens had only been tined and treated last Monday. In all the threads I've read about tining no-one has mentioned the sand that's put on afterwards (maybe others don't do that?).
I found putting on them ok, but it was really annoying to have every ball rolled on it end up looking like a range ball, with a ring of sand on it when it stops.

You've still entered and played the 3 comps though , its not your fault one isnt a qualifier for h/c. Explain this and they should show some common sense ROFL

I'm sure the rule is there to stop people only entering and winning comps where they can't get cut so they keep their handicap intact.

I can't even imagine wanting to do that but apparently some do.
I'm gutted I haven't been cut for today, it feels like a waste of a good round.
I would have won div1 of the comp as well if I'd been eligible.

I putted ok on them after I'd got used to the slower pace and reduced borrow. Just got fed-up of having to clean the ball before every putt lol.

i had the same happen to me this weekend as i shot 42 points in our weekly junior comp but we were playing off yellow tees so i couldn't get cut

Well, I asked the question yesterday, and just had a reply back that there's nothing I can do and there are no more qualifying comps until next year.

So that's the end of my competetive golf for this year. Sniff. :(

It seems that a lot of clubs no longer hold qualifying competitions and that there is a definite line drawn in the competitive year. Why is this. We play medals and stablefords throughout the year and will only declare them non-qualifying if we're forced to put any greens onto temps.

Winter rules should not prevent rounds from being classed as non-qualifying:

Rule 15 of the CONGU rule book reads as follows:-

The adoption of preferred lies, can allow Qualifying Competitions to be conducted under acceptable playing conditions. Clubs should, whenever practicable, play competitions as Qualifying competitions during the preferred lie period. Reference should be made to Decisions 1(a) and 1(b) that have been formulated to promote and encourage Qualifying Competitions in the preferred lie period.

When preferred lies are in operation the following points shall be taken into consideration:

15.1 Competition Play Conditions will apply not withstanding the application of a Local Rule for preferred lies as a result of adverse conditions during the period from 1st October to 30th April. Preferred Lies may be used during that period but are not mandatory upon clubs during any part thereof. The Local Rule may be to specified holes only.

15.2 Outside the period specified in 15.1 competition play conditions will not apply if preferred lies are in operation unless the consent of the Union or Area Authority has been first obtained.
