Belle Robertson & Laura Davies

Now R&A members, great to see.
Won't admitting Lady members to the R&A cause the sky to fall in? I remember that a few years ago they had a notice outside the club house door saying "No dogs or women". Glad they have at last caught up with at least the 20th century!

Nothing to apologised for - I stated I was inclined to call B/S on it. Until there's authoritative confirmation that there was a sign and that was the wording, then nothing doing! Here's an article from a pretty authoritative source that suggests there wasn't one at the R&A http://www.golftoday.co.uk/golf_international_mag/features/peter_dawson_interview.html

There was, apparently, a sign at RSG stating 'No dogs, No women' which may or may not still be there!

I can remember actually seeing the sign at St Andrews, although that was over 20 years ago.

So it seems you are besmirching Peter Dawson's suggestion that there has never been one!

I'm still inclined to call B/S on its existence - at least in his period of membership/management! I'm more inclined to take his word (or implication) that there hasn't been such a thing, or at least not for far longer than 20 years (and not that wording) than a rumour in some blog!

Here's an article that pooh-poohs the idea that there was/is a sign at RSG too! I've certainly not seen one in the several times I've been there - staying in the Dormy House once, where there's a book to note my 'after hours' drinks from the self-service bar. Everything else in the article pretty much matches my thoughts too! http://www.royalstgeorges.com/uploads/royalstgeorges/File/Traditional_Sandwich.pdf

Without more convincing evidence, I'd suggest 'urban myth' (uite happily replicated as fact by that paramount of truth - the Daily Wail) is exactly the expression to be levied at the one in your story too! Doon or another of the Scottish contingent might be able to help. There's certainly a great deal of dis/mis-information about it imo! And, having seen many of your assertions in other areas, I'm afraid I'm not prepared to take your 'memory' from 20 years ago as gospel either!

For the purposes of the pedant that pulled me up on another thread for not knowing the difference between the R&A and the Royal And Ancient Golf Club you should have said they are members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, and not of the R&A. As as everyone knows, they are completely different organisations.;)

Humble apologies, will do better next time.

It was Gullane that had the No Dogs and Women sign.
It was by the male entrance which was next to the ladies entrance which had a no dogs and men entry policy but no sign.
The mixed lounge had an internal entrance.

So are you saying that the R&A Clubhouse DIDN'T have the sign that DelC states he saw?

Could dogs go in the mixed lounge then? ;)

Just received a reply to my query to Royal & Ancient Golf Club as to there ever being such a sign, or whether it was an urban myth...

<Me>, thanks for your email. There has never been a sign of that kind displayed at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club so to the best of our knowledge this is an urban myth.

Regards,
Mike Woodcock.

So my inclination to call B/S on the assertion, that there was such a sign, has been vindicated!

...
A humble apology will be accepted!

I believe there could well be one due - but not in the direction you were thinking!
