Our Club's doing away with 5 day Membership

Correct as I just heard this morning that the Husband & wife (couples) discount has been done away with..... affects 15 couples I'm told.
We did that last year. We were getting in a bit of a judgemental position because cohabiting ( without a marriage certificate) partners wanted the same discount ( why not?) then we had a couple who considered themselves married , but without a certificate and mainly lived in separate houses. It basically became a nightmare trying to define the criteria. Simpler to remove the discount.

Not sure I follow.

(n*x)/(n*y) === n*(x/y)
without bothering with equations if a 7 day member was paying £1000 and a 5 day member £900 a difference of £100 and next year it goes up 10% the 7 day now pay £1100 and the 5 day £990 the difference is now £120 and so on.

Right, so the 5-day is still paying 90% of the 7-day, which is what you claimed the solution was

I think we still have a few (legacy) 5-day members but these days only 7-day offered. That said I think there is a case for bringing back 5-day as an option due to massive pressure on weekend tee times. There are plenty of retired and those who can work flexibly who’d happily settle for 5-day with access perhaps to at least some if not most of the board comps,

That is surely just cherry picking the best bits but not paying appropriately. They would like 7 days benefits but just pay, predominantly, for 5? If people want access to weekend comps, pay the 7 day fees 🤷🏻

When I first joined, everyone was initially a 5-day member until a space became available for 7 day membership. But then we did away with our 5-day membership years ago and at that time had nothing but 7 day members.

More recently we have developed a plethora of memberships to cover a huge range of people, with the one most similar to the old 5-day one being a Lifestyle membership where a much reduced fee is paid, and the member pays a similarly much reduced green fee to play.

I can't be bothered to work it out, but there is a sweet spot whereby if you play just the right number of games you will save over both green fees and a regular membership. It wouldn't work for me, I think I'm paying less than £6 a round.

.

Except they don’t play weekends…and only able to enter a few board comps. Point is…relieving pressure on weekend tee times would be of significant benefit for 7-day members.

I relieve pressure on the 5 day members by not playing daytime midweek. Can I get a reduction?

Everyone wants to pay less but a golf club costs what it is and everyone has to pay their fair share. If not the course, the club declines.

Actually it is not necessarily the case that everyone wants cheaper golf. Some of us want our subs to be what is necessary to meet the club’s needs. If the club felt it could get by with a limited number of 5-day memberships at a slightly lower cost - and in doing that made things better for 7-day members, then why not.

Slight misunderstanding there.

I am saying the directors have decreased the gap between 7 day and 5 day in real money rather than letting it grow which is what was happening.

Five day membership at a busy club is financially beneficial to the club.

When, a few years ago, I moved from seven to five days it freed up a place for someone on our waiting list to become a seven day member paying a full subscription.

Meanwhile the Club continues to receive a subscription at a reduced rate from myself.

A win for all parties as after 40 years at the Club I had no further interest in playing competitions every weekend on a busy course.

It also provides those on the waiting list with the opportunity to have access to the Club whilst they wait.

I do, however, agree that five day members should not be allowed to play in weekend competitions as that would seem to defeat the object of freeing up spaces on the start sheet.

Our Club has a 5 day which is £300 cheaper than the 7 day though but you can play on Sat and Sunday after 12 But you cannot play Board Comps or Match-play. What this does is free the weekend morning slots which is when 95% of the 7 day members want to play. It makes commercial sense as the Course is still very empty on Sat / Sun afternoons

Throughout the competition season i.e. late March to early October our Saturday start sheet is full from 7.00 a.m. until 3.00 p.m. and in in the remaining months 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

There is also a six day membership.

Both five and six day members are invited to enter President's, Captain's and Professional's Days comps but these are, of course, less serious. Personally I don't bother.
