When I was a bit younger and hitting the ball more consistantly, I used to prefer really short cut fairways. Heathland type courses or links, where you had very little grass on the fairways. Plenty of roll, and I was able to pick the ball up cleanly.
Nowadays I much prefer a nice fluffy lie, longer grass on the fairways..most of the time preferring to play out of the "first cut" than hitting the ball off a tight lie.
I know that a well struck shot from a tight lie is going to give you a bit more spin and bite, but I would rather sacrifice this for the ball to be sitting up like a dogs bollock.
Which do you prefer????

Give me a bit of fluff any day...

Ooh er Matron!!

The course I began playing had poor fairways, not well defined and not cut really short so you were almost playing most shots from a "1st cut" length anyway...

I am still sure this is a well disguised question on a totally different subject to golf.

I much prefer a bare lie, didn't used to but as I have improved my iron swing I have changed my mind.

With a full iron shot it doesn't bother me either way really, probably nice, short cut fairway as opposed to completely bare lie or first cut.

Chipping on the other hand = definitely NOT a bare lie! :D

Not fussed. Anything less than knee high especially off the tee is a bonus. Less than knee high and on the same hole is even more so.

I don't have a preference. I've worked hard on compressing the ball more so in theory should be able to do it off any sort of lie. That said a chip over a bunker off a bare lie is a foregone conclusion where the next will be played from

I'm up for a bare lie with a bit of fluff.....just don't get me thinking along those lines before the watershed.

Oh....I see what you're asking now.

Fluff for me - I guess it depends if you are confident of your strike/divot, which in my case is never, not even on my lowest ever rounds.

Bare lie with anything I want to stop, so down to about 4 iron.

Anything longer than that it's nice to have the reassurance that it's sitting up a bit.

Fairways - I'll take anything!

But in some of the rough at our place, we've got really bad bare, dry, muddy lies, with tufts of grass to catch the clubhead! Now that I hate!
