I've decided to devote next week to Golf and getting a replacement run around car.

So, although it pains me, she needs a home.

I could sell it privately, but I fear it could take ages and means dealing with a load of tyre kickers. I can see it now

1) where's the service book?
2) how come it's only got one key?
3) can I test the 0-60 on the bypass?
4) is it faster than my mates Fiesta zetec-S?

I bought it at the BCA auction, got the cambelt and clutch done, serviced it myself and have parts replaced as and when.

I could take it to the auction on Friday, but I've only ever bought not sold, so it could potentially start at £100 and sell at £200. ??

OR, I could drive it to view some possibilities, and play it by ear.

Does anyone know what dealers do with old cars? Do they mentally take off the likely auction result and take that off the full sticker price?
Is it better to go in with cash and get the deal without any other car? If I could haggle £200 off the new(er) car and get £200 at the auction that's £400, which I'm sure will be better than PX-ing.
Or should I just be up front, say "I want my MOT cost and repairs money/new battery money - which is about £270, so that's my minimum"

I could sure do with some tips and advice.

In the meantime, she'll be on the pavement with a sticker. "£495, get to the Golf Club faster than a Fiesta" :)

Yes, 1.7

I think I'll just take it with me tomorrow to the first "viewing" and see what sort of response I get to leaving it with the dealer and driving off in another car, albeit still old and banger-worthy.

It's not really the money, it's the hassle. I don't want to see a car in London, Luton or Leeds and then have to go back the next day on the train and sell my car privately...

One of my son's recently sold his better halfs X reg Punto thru' e-bay... It was fairly hassle free and he got a slightly better price than expected... So don't discount the 'bay as a potential selling opportunity...

It's a good thought. Cheers Mega, I'd not even thought about that.

On Thursday evening I needed a quick cheap purchase - saw two on Gumtree - first was sold to first viewer, 30 mins after appearing and we bought ours 15 mins after it appeared on Gumtree - again we were the first viewers.

That's nice...next...let's make sense

OK Dave I will spell it out for you in small words - rgdave wondered where to market his current motor ..... ok so far? .... I offered the fact that Gumtree seemed very active on the car marketing business and explained my very current experience in this market.
Now this may not be understandable to you but I hope rgdave does understand it although you seem to have a wee bit of a problem.

:)

I got it both times, ta muchly.

I spoke to a trader today who was totally up front with me. I'd driven 40 miles to see a 190 Celica, and it had just been sold to a cash buyer. He was, um, a little sorry for me.

He said.

Auction, I'll get £300, maybe £250 on a slow day and £400 on a good day. PX, he reckons about £400, but that'll be off the price of the new motor, which I could get £200 off without my car.

Best of all, he explained how to get a fast sale on autotrader. It's complicated (not a trade secret exactly) and he said given the colour/wheels and condition, I could sell it in under a week for...

.....

£850 o.n.o.

.....

Better get the camera out then. :)
