This is generally why I refuse to play with strangers. Unfortunately at comps that poses a problem....

There was a whopping and feisty thread on this a while back. Boy was there some hatred of those chip markers. It spiralled out of control but it was funny to see how badly some people disliked them. Poor etiquette from the player to a pretty simple request on this occasion.

I bought myself a poker chip on the strength of that thread just to annoy my PP :D

And there was me thinking golf is a social game and a great way to meet new people.

You generally refuse to play with strangers because they might have a casino chip style marker, or because you are worried about confrontation asking them to move it?

Still, bit of a backward take on life my friend. Strangers are merely friends you haven't met yet!

And, when he has finished moving it the first time, just say "another one please", and so on - all within the rules.

Before he starts moving it, make note of a mark on the green by the ball.
When he replaces it wrongly after 6 "another one please", you can pull him up on playing from the wrong place!

Trouble is, the Rules are written under the assumption that golfers are reasonable people.
You can't legislate for stupidity...

Agree that he can use whatever he wants to mark his ball.
He does not have the right to interfere with your line of play.

Ok rules are rules , common sense can't be used .:smirk:

I think common sense vacated the thread when people suggested they'd want the marker moving 20 head widths away because they could still see it.

I'm going on dragons den with invisible ball markers. The repeat business would be amazing.

I was playing a guy today who was using one of those big chips they use in the casinos as a marker, he had a put his ball stopped about 6 inch from the hole ,he wanted to mark it pick it up and clean it .
It was my put and his marker was interfering with my put ,so I asked him to change his marker to something smaller so it didn't interfere with my line of vision.
He said he could use anything within reason to mark his ball, which I agreed with ,but I told him that if I asked him to change his marker to something that doesn't interfere with my line of vision he is obliged to under the rules ,which he strongly disputed.
Who is right and where does it say this in the rules of golf?
Pleaseeeeeeeeeee help

WOW!

I have absolutely no interest in reading any other replies, but people who mark their ball near the hole with one of these are plain and simply ignorant.

Fair enough, use a big marker when your ball is far from the hole so you can see it when you're stalking your putt, but when your ball is near the hole you should use something like a 5 pence piece so it doesn't distract other players.

I always carry 2or 3 different size coins for this reason.

I have only just started playing, and still have lots to learn. At the end of the day though it's a few blokes whacking a ball around a big field. I played with a feller the other day who kept telling me if we were playing a competition he would be deducting shots from me. Of course, I simply reminded him it wasn't a competition. This is my only fear going forward. Golf is meant to be enjoyed, and people arguing about rules ruins it. My only suggestion to your problem is to threaten him by suggesting you drown his children, decapitate his dog, and rape his wife if he doesn't mark his ball with a proper marker. I believe this will probably do the job
