Car went in for its MOT yesterday and failed, so they've still got it, hopefully it will be finished today but around a £300 estimate so far :(

Can I put it in early next year even though its in date and get it away from Christmas?

I was told you could get it's MOT sorted now but then choose to have it done again in the summer. This would be a new MOT with an expiry date of a year from then. Yes, you'd be paying for two MOT's in under a year but then the renewal date would be in the summer.

Could be wrong though.

If you open the link Foxholer put up, the maximum you can do it early is 1 month, if its failed you shouldn't drive it though, even though you effectively still have an in-date MOT, that's because you are now aware that the vehicle is not roadworthy.

The one month early thing, is only if you want it to continue on the original expiry date.

As Chellie points out, if you get a mot test done in August nextyear, then that's the new expiry date ... It just means you have paid for two tests during this year.

You can take it for MOT up to one month before the test is due.

However, if it passes, the next test due date will be the same date as the previous years pass date, so effectively you will then have an MOT that is valid for 13 months.

There is nothing to stop you taking it earlier than this though, but you just get a 12 month certificate when it passes.

Don't think you are wrong, if you want to pay for the two MoT's.

You can't alter the date the car was first registered, and it's the 3rd anniversary of registration when the vehicle requires the MoT and then annually thereafter. But I don't know of anything that prevents you paying for the second MoT and then renewing it off of that date. Might get a few funny looks the first time but once it's done then you're sorted.

The one month prior is designed to make it easier to book an appointment, not to move the due date.

You can get a car MOT'd at anytime. Think about it, most garages sell 2nd hand cars with a new MOT.
