Prompted by an answer on the tee thread (and others here and elsewhere), why is it some golfers leave off the direct article when talking about (the) driver?

“When I hit driver”, “I’m having trouble hitting driver”, “Driver is essential to my game” etc. It sounds really odd (to me).

And as a subsidiary question, since I’ve never seen it done for other clubs, why not for woods, wedges and irons also?

Enquiring minds and all that.
