Struggling a little of late with my irons. Dispersion is huge with them - anything from 15 yards left to 20 yards right.

I was told at a custom fitting session recently that i should probably go to a stiff shaft from a regular.

With woods i'm hitting it straight as anything. Just with the irons i'm stepping up and unsure where it's going.

I'm wondering this will be down to having too soft a flex. Any suggestions?

I'm no expert but I wouldn't say a stronger shaft would help. If your shaft was to weak, you'd hit the same bad shot constantly, i.e 10 yards right.

Sounds like someone needs a couple lessons and some hard work on the range!

I think the fact that you step up to the ball "unsure of where its going" is as likely to be the reason for your large shot dispersion than your clubs..

A custom fitting will benefit some players hugely and others not at all. Equipment can change the ball flight on your good shots, and slight mishits, but it cant stop you pulling the ball AND pushing the ball or slicing AND hooking...

If your shafts are much too soft you can spray it everywhere, if they are a bit soft you'll generally hit a lot of hooks. Worth trying a stronger shaft, but also paying attention to alignment.

Is it the shaft or the swing. I'd be concerned that there isn't a stock bad shot either left or right and that there are hooks and slices (or power draws and fades). I think a lesson would be the best starting point and see what is going on with the swing first and then decide what to do about the shafts

I've been thinking a little more about this after a night on the range and its predominantly a push or block right that is hurting me.

Anything I lose left is due to me getting to quick.

So next question is, what causes a block right?
