Put my bin out early this morning, the green wheelie type, right out side my front gate only to find it 3 houses down! Now that doesn't sound far but in the grand scheme of things, I think it is.

But not only that, rather than placing them all against the wall of gardens in these high winds we are experiencing today, they are left right on the edge of the pavements and now empty they are blowing and falling around and into the street!

From the days of coming into your garden, picking up the bin and carrying it to the lorry and then putting it back where they found it, have bin men become lazy and unthoughtful!

Binmen used to come and collect whatever was at the bottom of the path/drive. These days the lid must be closed over totally, no recyclable material in the black bin, no celophane etc in the blue bin. Lazy, perhaps, H&S gone nuts definitely.
We have a new recycle centre in Bangor which apparently only recycles 20% or so of all recyclable materials brought in. Cracking use of local money.

Doing more houses for less, with fewer people. "Efficiency" at the expense of service would be my guess.
I very much doubt that the binmen are lazy, looks like hard flipping work to me.

That's just reminded me of a situation/argument I had about a year ago.

Put my Garden (brown lid) cuttings bin out early in the morning and when I came home it was still their, full!

I rang the council and they said they would investigate. They came back to me stating that there was animal (dog) waste in a plastic bag/s in the bin and as such it was left.

Someone had walked their dog and placed a single doggy bag in my bin as they went past, now is that a jobs worth or what!

I think cutbacks, targets (yep targets) and enforced constraints from the beurocrats is to blame.
We only have one bin (black) because "we live rurally" no other details were given for that decision. It used to be collected every Wednesday between 9am and 3pm. Got a letter stating this was changing to a Friday between 9am and 9pm. To take lorrys off the road presumably.
So Friday of last week was the first day of the new regime... Put bin out on Friday morning - emptied Wednesday at 10am!

I don't blame the binmen themselves for this they are obviously being driven to complete a workload that is now beyond capability.

Is the correct answer.
Anyone who thinks that running from one side of the street to the other behind a bin wagon for upto 8 hrs a day is easy should give it a go.
Don't judge a man until you've walked / run a mile in their shoes..etc.etc..

I know what you are saying but is it really up to them to take dog poo out of your bin if it is in the garden waste?

Binmen are like everyone else who works for the government. More and more is expected of you nowadays with less resources and people to do it. You should know that like i do being ex forces.....:mmm:

I wouldn't say lazy but annoying I put out baby powder metal container every week to recycle some times they take it sometimes they reject it. I also have had to replace my recycle bin 3 times this year as when watching the bin men they stand on them to reach up high in lorry and then slide them with force back towards the house and they crack when they catch on the pavement. Not helping recycling by replacing 3 bins are they.

Job and knock round here. What a cushy life they used to have. Some were home done and dusted by 10.30am, I kid you not. All rounds restructured in the last 6 months. Now they nearly all do a full days work. None have left though. What does that tell you?

They have families & mortgages & like the rest of us they put up with changes because the bills have to be paid ??? just a thought

our binmen used to have to carry a bin on the shoulders and tip it into a cart then carry bin back to garden, now i have to sort out all my rubbish into the 3 bins and 2 bags and a box supplied by the council, then have to make sure they are on the front kerb with the handle pointing out on a set time and day,the refuse collector just pushes the bin onto a lift that tips the bin he then leaves in on the road for me to bring in (clean up any spillage) and wash down the bin (if noticed fitted stating bin in a dirty condition?)they are not lazy it is the job that has altered.

I worked for the council through an agency for the eclipse. I was a driver and had an 8 wheeler with 5 lads filling it. Now they only have 6 wheelers and a crew of just 3 instead of 4 INCLUDING the driver. Down here the areas covered each day are vast as all the out lying villages have to be covered. Noone wants their council tax to go up but expect the same service for effectively less money.
Is your bin empty?
Be thankfull for that, also did the wind not take the bin down the road in the first place?

Then they take all that crap that you have sorted out to a recycling plant which generates cash back into the council that keeps out council tax down. All the garden waste goes to another place and that then leaves only a small amount to go into landfill. Or just to save you having to sort a bit of rubbish out we should all pay an extra £500 in council tax so the council will employ someone to do all this sorting out for us. Not enough money in the local government to give us what we had in the past. I watched the binmen come past about an hour ago and they are working bloody hard. They are really shifting up the road after that lorry grabbing the bin bags.

No complaints from me about the binmen in our area. Put the wheelie bin out first thing, bring it back after work, no problem. Sort the cardboard, cans and plastics out for the fortnightly pick up, easy. Think yourself lucky if you get your garden waste collected, we still have to sit in the queue at the local tip on a Sunday morning!
