Was thinking about getting myself one, primary use (other than telling the time) would be on the golf course, however I'd also want to use the various health and exercise monitoring tools.

Nearly bought one yesterday as the price of the 3 has dropped by £20, and I have an ebay voucher for another 10% off, so could get one from Currys for £160. However the thing that stopped me buying was the thought that if I am playing golf, the last thing I want is a stream of notifications from texts, emails, fb, whatsapp etc etc.

Is it possible to switch off all notifications and still use Hole19 or whatever the best golf app is?

Yes you can turn of notifications, or choose which ones you still want to receive if you want to see sports scores etc. It’s perfect for health and exercise monitoring, i never used to wear a watch at all. Since I have got the apple 4 watch, I have never looked back.

This might be a stupid question, but do you need to have a mobile phone for these smart watches to operate, or are they completely independant of each other?

you’ll need a phone to set up but then it can operate independently.
hole 19 you need to start the app on your phone but can then put your phone away and just use the watch.I’ve been a big fan and collector of mechanical watches for 15 years , bought an Apple Watch in March and haven’t worn and old watch since .
brilliant for golf, cycling, running .

Works perfect with Golfshot, I use it in combination with my laser for maximum information.

You need the phone to start the round.

Stats are easy to keep and looks like this

I use mine to wake up the wife with the mickey voice .. she loves it!
I bought mine because it worked out cheaper than a sat nav and I wanted to try one.

How long does the charge last on your iwatches?
I charge mine overnight. Used Hole 19 for 18 holes yesterday and I was down to under 10% power by the time I went to bed (about midnight). I had also done a 30 min workout (cycling) where the watch was recording that activity.
Hole 19 certainly uses more battery power as on a non golf day I can have 60-70% of charge left by bedtime. However, it seems to cope Ok with using the GPS and lasts all day.
