Me & a mate are thinking of playing at Celtic Manor on either the Montgomerie or Roman Road courses next month. Has anyone any experience of either of these?
Yes mate - I played the Roman Road Course last September. The course played quite long in general(as you would expect of a championship course). The greens were very good - firm and true. If I were to be picky, I would say there was significant evidence of heavy traffic, i.e. unreplaced divots. That said, there was an army of greens staff working on the course and the staff in general were very welcoming. The course has some spectacular views and some equally spectacular holes.
I was an invitee so didn't have to fork out for the green fee - I'm not sure how much it costs for a round? Another great course to consider in that area is St Pierre, which I also played last year (well worth a visit).
Hello Slaighty,
I am a member at the Celtic and would say to come and play either course but the Monty is a hard walk and the Roman Road is the course more favoured by a lot of the members. When you have a date in mind I would be more than happy to meet you there to give you a quick guide or maybe join you for the round if you wish, if I am not working that day. If your thinking of playing on a weekend , each day one course is for guests and the other is for members only and the courses change the following day.
If you need any more info just ask.
