I was watching the news this morning and during the paper review they talked about anti semitism in the Labour party and the definition of it. I grew up in the north west of England, moved to Newcastle and then up into Northumberland. What your religion is has never been relevant. I've not seen people push it, I've not seen people abused for it. I have certainly never come across any anti Jewish sentiment. Is this issue a London thing? Do others see it in other parts of the country?

Interested to hear other people's experiences.

In Glasgow your religion does still have some relevance :( but on the Jewish side I just don't think so. I was brought up in a well off part Glasgow and I grew up alongside a large jewish community. In fact about a third of my primary school classmates were Jewish - and most of my best friends - and those of my brother - were Jewish. The only resentment I held was that they got more holidays than us :)

That said - in more recent years when home in Glasgow I have noticed that there looks to be security outside the local synagogue when services are on - and I don't recall that being the case in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Though the fact of Bonnyton Golf Club as it was then cannot be ignored.

I really struggle to understand anti-semitism other than it possibly just being resentments against a hard-working; generally very successful, and well-connected and self-supportive community. But for me - my Jewish friends were just my friends who happened to be Jewish.

But that could and has been said in the past (hundreds of years) about Scots abroad.

Why should one religious group be elevated above all others?

It shouldn't. This used to be said about the power and influence of the catholic constituency of the Labour Party in Glasgow and the Central Belt - see for example the Monklands scandal of the 1990s.

^^^I think this sums it up well...

Historically, way back in the day of slums, there was a good chance your landlord was Jewish and probably not very caring... Easy to build up 'gripes'/resentments in those circumstances...

Now why am I not surprised with this post...
An opportunity for a bit of London bashing not to be missed eh Doon?

75% of anti-semitism occurs in London and Manchester. The majority of Jews/synagogues in the UK are in London and Manchester.

For me, there's 2 elements to it, both of which just shouldn't happen. There's the thugs in the street, and there's the systemic variety, e.g. the ongoing row within Labour.

Not forgetting the historic ones, especially within golf/sports club membership.
Harold Abrahams being a good example.

uhhh…...reading the many reports that prompted the OP.
They cannot all be 'fake news'.

So you regularly dismiss ALL media negativity with regard your views...
Yet you are quite happy to accept it when it suits...
Especially if it allows you to indulge in your passion for Londoner bashing particularly those with an "estuary accent"...

I tend to agree with Dft. The problem is one of the Elite Left and their pro Palestinian, anti Jewish stance. Corbyn has been their champion.
Now theres a first, agreeing with Doon.

Shouldn't 'Jewish' be 'Israeli'?

Though 'the Left' would certainly have issues with the Jewish approach to money/capital!

Fwiw, I'm Pro Palestinian AND Pro Israeli! Though my views on their religions are a bit different!

Think you might want to reconsider the 'Jewish' be 'Israeli' comment. I'm pretty sure many of the comments supposed to come from a number of Labour supporters/MP's have had very little to do with Israel. If you read the recent history of what has come from Labour, apart from Corbyn cuddling up to Hezbollah, its been all UK anti-semitism apart from Ken Livingston wanting to rewrite history. And if you go onto the Jewish Anti-semitism website you'll see oodles of examples of it.

I believe Semitic/Semite has it's roots from 'Sem' the Son of Noah who was the founding Father of the Jewish Race so antisemitism would be a hatred of Judaism and not just Zionism.
