I can't believe such a talent can do three weeks on the bounce missing the cut while playing such dramatically bad shots and with a big dose of bad luck. Can he pull this back before the US Open? The guy has proved that he is a fantastic ball striker but he just seems to be spiralling into the abyss.
Any other thoughts about his current predicament?
 
He's not playing well but he's hardly on the abyss....

He seems to making a few silly mistakes and it's costing him - a double here, a triple there and a quad thrown in for good measure...

Poor form to take into the US Open
 
He was well managed with the Chandler stable but the allure of more money and freedom and the reigns are off and he's a playboy golfer free to do as he pleases and guess what. It doesn't work. He either wants to be the best in the World and winning lots of Majors (everyone agrees he should be doing both) or he's a spoilt wee boy living it large. He'll never emulate what Tiger did as the story already shows he is mentally weak compare to Tiger and Tiger wants to win badly every time with no excuses, whereas Rory has lots of excuses. I don't like playing in the wind and rain boo hoo. Pathetic.
I do like him and may still like him and think he still has a lot of maturing to do so in light of his age, I'm hoping he'll go for it and decide win at all costs on all courses in all conditions.

Tiger is a machine - he is desperate to win. You can see it in his eyes. This is a hunger born from growing up with something missing in your life. it means whatever happens you don't take it for granted and you have a work ethic.

Are you suggesting McIlroy doesn't have work ethic or isn't thankful?

If so, you don't know much about McIlroy.
 
I have a theory that there are a few players out there who are brilliant but just lack something to be consistent top quality winners. I guess multiple major winners are rare but some guys just haven't fulfillef their potential and I think it's because they get too much money too quickly. It's not just prize money. Eg. There's a guy from New Zealand who has been signed to IMG for a few million and he's done nothing since. In the old days you would have to slog away on tour for a few thousand a week, maybe getting paid for wearing a certain cap or jumper. You had to hit the big time in a major to have a hope of making big money. Even at the lowly rank of just keeping your card on the European Tour will mean you've earned at least 250,000 euros.

I agree to some extent, what Rory needs is to forget all of the off course things and get back to playing and practicing hard.

Rory would do well to take a leaf out of Faldo's book, he had the practice till you drop mentality that Rory could do with.
 
Also, I don't think he can adapt to playing in windy conditions. At the open last year he got blown away, as he did at St Andrews the previous year. Even last week at Wentworth he didn't seem able to adapt to playing in the wind.

Good point, although odd given that he comes from a links course in N Ireland I think. Everyone of the pros can have a couple of bad shots but usually the cream rises and they grind out a score that means they make the cut. That's how they consistently stay at the top. As you say he doesn't seem to be able to calm down when he is in a bad spot. Maybe it's the way he leans forward onto his club with his head down that made me say he's "spiralling into the abyss". He won't stay inside the world top 3 long on this form.
