Off the back of the threads discussing sexual equality in golf clubs. What are your opinions on age equality? As in, the costs of membership for those in their twenties etc. being considerably lower at a number of clubs than for those aged thirty and above. Surely this goes against the equalities and discrimination based upon age?

It does rub some people up the wrong way but when the members at some clubs have an average age of 70+ you have to do something to attract younger members.

As far as I can remember when I read the advice to golf clubs from the EGU it said that pricing can vary when trying to even up the numbers in age groups that are under represented but that it has to be for that purpose only. Also, I dont think that the age part of the equality Act has come into force yet

^ Yes, not come in yet, but positive discrimination for under represented groups would be allowed.

we have juniors paying £40 a year to play at 14 going up to £250 for some one 21 i pay £1100 is it a different course or do i get anything different not on your sweet f***y,everyone should pay the same after18 years old.

You happy for golf to die then?
why would golf die????so your saying any one over the age of 18 should subsidise everyone else,i know it sounds harsh but if you cant afford to be a member of a club then don't join and if some go under then it is tough but the ones that do their members will join another thus keeping the better ones healthy, and lets face it if the fee is £1000 its less than £20 a week hardly mega bucks.

Clubs need a mix of ages and certainly need to be less reliant on a large and aging seniors section. I am all for doing what is necessary do attract members from groups that are under represented. The problem is that most clubs seem to have 2 set reductions and are missing out in other areas. Take my old club, plenty of juniors, who get discounts, and plenty of seniors who also get reduced fees. What was actually needed was people in the age group 35-45 who there were very few of yet this is the group who are meant to be subsidising the reduced fees. It is often that age group who have the least disposable income and yet receive no discounts and are leaving clubs in their droves.

I do find it frustrating that I have to fork out full whack and there are guys around up to the age of 32 getting a discount. Surely if you can't afford full whack by the time you hit the 30's then youneed to be looking at a cheaper club. Maybe that would cost the club in the short and long term but you have to wonder how many guys only a little older (40's) are looking at this disparity and thinking of moving somewhere else on the back of it.

There is line to be drawn here and I am all for making it as accessible for juniors and particularly teenagers to joing and get involved in all aspects. Once they leave school and find work these are potentially the nucleus of the club going forward and we need to keep them. Yes I know golfers are more migratory than ever but if you can make it a place they feel wanted at then it has to help. It is as people get older and earn more that the problem for me begins. If you are 23-27 at Royal Ascot you pay just £715 compared to £1425 for a full fee payer. I don't see the logic and feel that it is the core of the club that have been there years that are carrying the younger members. Can that be right?

i think in south east you lot pay extortionate rates for your memberships! 1000+ for a golf membership is crazy in my opinion. As someone in there late 20s i would be glad at a lower rate if it was over a grand! With saving to get on the property ladder gettin married and hopefully starting a family i welcome all discounts coming my way.

I was only 26 last week and I don't think it's right that I get a discount as I'm under 30. My job is well paid and I'd imagine I have more spare cash than most at my club, so it doesn't seem right.

But The generation before and after me will benefit from the intermediate membership, so I won't lose too much sleep over it.

It's always annoyed me.
I know that new blood has to be attracted into the club/game but what rankles me is the assumption that just because you are of a certain age you're able/not able to afford full fees.
Many under 30's have far more disposable income than I have yet at some clubs I'd be expected to pay double what they're paying.........
