By that token, why do Celtic other than financial reasons part take in the cl. As to be fair they have just as little a chance if winning that. Or why does the fa cup start with prelims? So we can all dream. Look at city, as low as third tier in recent memory and now pushing for glory on all fronts.

Yes, look at City. Shows what can be achieved by the arrival of a Middle Eastern trillionaire, otherwise forget it. The idea surely is to compete or at least improve and outside the top 6 or 7 clubs I am afraid I don't see much improvement.
 
Teams want to stay in the Prem so they can play to top level of club football and test themselves against the top teams. Teams want to establish themselves in the prem
 
If Rangers and Celtic had collected half of the TV money that EPL sides get they would be a regular top eight EPl side.
They would provide a massive financial boost to the EPL over all areas but especially world wide TV.
Compare then to teams like Watford, Fulham, QPR, Palace, Hull, Birmingham, WBA, Cardiff, Swansea and it is a no brainer.
Even in the third tier of Scottish football Rangers are attracting bigger crowds than half of the EPL teams.

One possible side effect of a Yes vote in the referendum would be,thankfully, that this could never happen with the ban on any further cross border leagues.
