watched the seniors open at carnoustie , langer and mcarron use the `long` putter ...certainly looks like there still the same as before the ban ! they say their not , but very hard to tell ..thoughts !!

When they banned anchoring they missed an opportunity to ban broomsticks too. Poor decision. It's too much open to interpretation now. Certainly mcarron looks like he anchors.

The rule should have included a shorter length, and in my view a grip where both hands are touching. Hard to prove, but certainly not split inches apart!

Gotta agree, certainly McCarron looked like he anchored.
In his commentary Tony Johnston said they should have restriccted the length of the putter, that way it would have sorted it all out

Definitely looked anchored and you'd think that with all the zoomed up, frame by frame trials by TV we've seen regarding the rules, surely it should be simple to look on the TV and speak with the PP's and see if there's a rule infringement. Too late now but the rules should have been give a maximum length of putter

If Langer says he doesn't anchor on the actual putt, then he doesn't anchor!

Knowingly breaking Rules of Golf is so far from his particular 'philosophy' that I'm sure he'd give up golf if he did it!

Do people really think that they would open break the anchoring rule knowing that everyone will be watching them - I think we can trust Langer to be not anchoring the putter

Several broom handle users still appear to be anchoring, even if they are not by a fraction of an inch, so how can you easily tell whether or not they are? Surely a maximum length for putters should have been put in place at the same time as the anchoring ban!

Looks dodgy but in reality it isn't (and I really don't think we should be insisting on some of these older fellas wearing skin tight tops just to appease a few guys on a golf forum)

Anyway it seems one rule where only the player can admit to a breach, it can't/won't be proven by TV/committee/referee/FC's etc

In which case it's a bad rule!

I am sure all these guys have had their strokes scrutinised close up by the authorities and given the all clear.

I play with a guy who still uses a broom handle. He never anchored and doesn't now but you have to be close up to see this. I and his other usual PPs have all had a close look to confirm to him that his stroke is OK. There is a small but clear gap between his top hand and his body, but from a distance you wouldn't be able to tell.

It's a perfectly fine rule

There is no need to ban long putters or restrict the length - they said they are not allowed to be anchored so that's what the people with long putters don't do now.

One of our regulars uses a long putter and has done for years - switched to it as a last resort before giving up the game - it worked and it still does now - he is not breaking any rule and we trust him as people should do

So what should be the maximum length then..?

The people who need to know, i.e referees and f/cs can easily tell because they are seeing it in close up. It isn't about whether we can tell when watching on TV.

How about a rule that says that both hands should be at least touching each other on the grip, as well as no anchoring to the body? That would stop pendulum style putting strokes.

Why do you need to stop pendulum style strokes ? - I know someone who putts with a normal size putter and has one hand very low and they don't touch each other ?

Why are you trying to find a rule to a problem that doesn't exist

There is no issue with the size of the putter

I did chuckle watching the commentary when one of the commentators said that it wasn't anchored, and you can clearly see that...... when it was far from clear, at least from the camera angle that he was commentating on. I'm a huge fan of Langer, but every time I watch him putt, the hand and forearm both look like they are "anchored", it's impossible to tell from the camera distance and angles that we watch from. Before writing this, I just googled Langer putting, I couldn't see one image that made it clear that he wasn't anchoring, so it all comes down to Langer's own integrity, which according to this article from February this year, is good enough for everyone concerned (http://www.golfdigest.com/story/the...langers-new-putting-stroke-has-people-talking). I think it will always be a disputed conversation, but I'm happy to go with Langer's integrity.

Also think the one-armed players would kinda like to carry on playing the game too
