Almost made some enemies at my new club today...

But, given that this is detailed within Section 1, it is only a 'guideline' it's not actually a Rule, therefore clubs can make their own local rule without being in conflict with one of the Rules of Golf. If this was somehow worked into the Rules of Golf, then it would be clearcut and simple.

I stand corrected, if as you state it is just a guideline, I was always led to believe it was a Rule.
You live and learn
Ive only been playing this game 10 years, a very late starter, but got the 'bug' kinda OCD style
Anyway, as stated earlier, guys just need to use common sense and show some decency

One day you may have to play against him in a knockout match. Start off the round with "So your the git who refused to let me finish a hole after your group let me through".

Sounds like classic nob syndrome. We have a few up our place and they always seem to have beards! The beard thing might just be my course!

I have been a member of my club since July last year.
I haven't had a problem with anyone in all that time except for the last time I played.
I went up the course for a bit of practice on 9 holes & unfortunately came across 2x right idiots, the first one wound me up, but I said nothing in return & just let it slide, I gave the 2nd one both barrels though as I was still annoyed at the 1st nutter.

As others have said, they appear to be at every club.

sounds very familiar, they probably think they own the golf course, knobs!well done for biting your tongue though.

These types exist everywhere, not just at golf clubs. You come across them driving your car, walking down the road, in the pub, every-pooping-where and in greater and greater numbers. It's a sad symptom of our broken society.

Cheers for your comments everyone.

I've no idea who they were but I will remember their faces and will get my own back one day that's for sure. ;)

As I'm a new member, I'm under some sort of "probation" where I'm not actually a full accepted member until my name has been on the "new member's board" for a few weeks - in case another member complains about me. I guess I'll just hold my tongue until then.

ridiculous rule that single player thingy, you pay your money so your entitlement is the same whether you ar eplaying in a 4 ball or not.fact is if you are holding players up let them through, where's the harm in that.

Unlikely - you can't enforce etiquette.

It would be interesting if the OP could check on the local rules at his new club.

Given that golf is to a large extent self policed at club level then I don't see why this would be any harder to enforce than any other rule. After all, I'm 100% sure there are incorrect drops taking place in competitions at every club in the country, who polices that?

If they made it a rule that you had to let the group behind play through if you lost a hole to the group in front then maybe more people would do it.

However, even if it was a rule it wouldn't have helped the OP anyway I wouldn't think as I don't imagine 4 old duffers on an empty course will be abiding by a lot of rules anyway.

Sorry to hear about what happened James. I've played at your place loads of times and the guys on here are right, there is always a mix of people from the best to the worst and you club, like mine, have their fair share. I am sure that you are going about it in the right way as you are a new member but definitely remember them as you will see them again if they are regulars, and deal with them later!

All the best

Chris

Im almost certain that rule has been abolished in the Rules of Golf, but could be mistaken
Ridiculous rule, either way
Common sense should prevail, 4 old guys out for a stroll, no problem, 1 ball or a pair behind, stand aside, be thru and away before you know it

I thought singles had equal standing too, could be wrong, personally always happy to let them thro', really dont want someone up my chuffer for the entire round.

You would like to think that common decency would dictate that if a 2,3 or 4 ball were not being held up by a group ahead, they would let a single player play through!!

Common decency is not that common these days.

The group had no right to dictate to the single how he should play the hole after being let through.

There are about 6 players at my course that I have had problems playing through. I often catch them up, and they never, ever let any one through. Individually, they are all nice guys, but in a group, they morph into idiots. No point in complaining to any one, but I have a long memory. At some point there will be a time when the boot is on the other foot.

Only 6? There's a group of about 15 at our place who go out at 1st light Saturday morning and they are always caught but never let anyone through despite holding up the whole course. They have been told several times but are still oblivious to it.

Seen this behaviour quite few times myself as I play as a single quite often and I'm pretty rapid round the course by myself.

But never actually been let through, tee'd off then asked to pickup. That's just dumb.

I'd have probably just said 'I'm going to finish the hole as I have a bit of a score going, I'll be as quick as I can".

i probably would have done what you did just to keep the peace only being a member for 2 week ,,when you have been there for a while & get to know people you may find the confidence to remind them what they did when they are in the club house NO one will like them for it thats when it will back fire on them

I would probably have refused and carried on with my round. Every club has idiots like this although i have been lucky so far at my current club. I probably would have also added as a single was i really likely to hold them up as i had just caught them up on the last few holes. Of course comments like his aren't going to help you play well.
