When was the last time you played by yourself?

At the minute I am playing nomadic golf and just picking up games at whatever course I decide to play at. Turned up at a course yesterday early doors and couldn't get a game so the Pro told me to go straight out by myself if I wanted, so I thought what the hell and I did.

I was second out and fortunately the people in front moved out the way on the second fairway and let me go straight through. I got my phone out, put some Metallica on and played away.

I never rehit any tee shots, but tried out something interesting. If my approach didn't hit the green I hit another, If I didn't hit a good chip shot I replayed it, I had second hits at any putts within 10 foot that didn't drop. I noted that I rehit 5 approaches, 3 chips and 4 putts, the difference this made to my score was 8 shots.

So this makes me wonder one thing, is the adjusted score actually my potential ability if every shot I played was how I know I could play them.

I say yes for the the approach shots but no for the chips and especially the putts. Those short game shorts you get a feel for the shot and the line and break.

Recently I've been playing with myself a lot - ooh er- I think it's because I smell ;)

Yes.
It's something that tour players will sometimes do for a confidence boost. If you can shoot low by having a couple of goes at a few shots, you have the potential to do that with just one ball. Not a guarantee, but it shows your realistic potential.

I don't see that at all. Having one go at it is what it's all about isn't it?

Otherwise you are just looking at an eclectic - if that's the case I am potentially shooting a 56 this year!

Play by myself atleast once, sometimes twice a week. And do exactly the same. Will always keep track of my actual ball in play score wise. But anything I feel iv hit badly or on the wrong line I will have another go at. Enjoy getting out there and practising on course environment. And led me to a round at 13 over par, (playing one ball only) being off 20 couldn't be more chuffed. Gives you that bit of confidence that it's in there somewhere and helps picking lines being in similar positions round to round approach shot wise.

It's not an eclectic score as I'm not taking my best score on every hole. It was more a case of re-hitting some shots that I made a mess of. Like 1 hole, my first shot I stupidly went at a tight pin, short sided myself and got a bogey. On the second shot I just hit the middle of the green and made easy par. Another hole was an 80 yard wedge I pushed right, missed the green and it went in the water costing me a bogey, the second shot I hit to a few foot and made birdie.

I just hit a few shots again out of curiosity more than anything.

No, you're just cheating mate. ;)

I do similar when I'm out on my own for a but of practice, but sometimes I can rack up a huge score on a hole if my second, third, fourth, etc, attempts are just as bad/worse.

It's a great game to play out on your own, but you asked whether the better 2nd ball is your true potential. I say it's not, in the same way that an eclectic score isn't your true potential.

Next time you're out, play one ball aiming for the centre of every green regardless of where thepin is - go flag hunting with the other. Almost guarantee that the safe ball will score better.

Most times I hit the par 3 course, like today :)

As a nomadic golfer I usually try and arrange a game to play away somewhere on a full 18 hole course.

Played on my own today. I do it quite regularly.
As for the second ball scoring thing, I'm kinda with robobum, golf is all, about being able to score under pressure with the pencil in your hand. What you've just described with th second ball is basically gaining experience. Making good judgement calls comes from experience, experience comes from making bad judgement calls. Technically you are probably right about it being your true potential, doing it when it counts is another matter all together.

Played 9 on Friday on my own!

Single ball, playing as if I was in a medal!

Went again after the comp on sat! I caught up with the comp fourball so tried a few different shots around the green etc. got fed up after 7 and walked in!

The honest answer is NO, but you already know that.

I'm not for 1 minute implying that I am of a standard to shoot that modified score as that would be my best ever round, 5 under gross. It was more of a curiosity that given the chance to hit a few shots again, how much different would my score had been.

It just gives me that warm fuzzy feeling to know that with a bit more consistency there is room for improvement. It's not like I played a better ball and took the best score and I only ever played 1 from the tee. It was just a few shots that I knew could have been better executed.

Just think how good that round would have been if your handicap ever goes out to 9 again Adey.....
