As most people know i get all my golf tips out of books or watching videos on you tube, however after a read or watching a video my next round is usually a bad round as with all the info im probably over thinking things and have too many thoughts going through my head.Is this the same for you if you read, and what about the people who have lessons,do you get overloaded with thoughts which effects your game.Usually its only one round and then im back to normal.

I think most golfers who want to improve end up with too many thoughts going through there head, resulting in $hit play. I know a few really good players and they are constantly tinkering with their swing although it doesn’t look like it to me.

Have the odd lesson, mainly to sort out rough edges, but I never take on board any more than a couple of things at once or I’ll get crossed up.

If you don’t play enough then it’s hard to get some repeatability into your swing when making changes and you end up hunting for a rhythm.

Don’t read too much, work on a couple of priorities before moving on. Make sure you have a stable set up and alignment before you tinker around with things.

I deliberately skip over the tuition pages in golf mags. Don't want too many thoughts filling my head.
The one thing I do like doing before a game though, and I honestly find it helps, is play a few rounds of Tiger Woods on the old 360. Get's a rhythm going in my head and I find it really does make a difference.
I must get it back off the kids

I dont agree with advice from mags, vids tc, Only people who can see me play I take notice of. Unless its simple, generic stuff and even then I try not to complicate my game.

When I first started playing the game I used videojug for basic stuff and once that was grooved my pro tweaked things. I know how everything should work, it just takess a while to get it right after I stop playing.

You can definitely get bogged down with too many thoughts. Also, I find the tips in golf mags too generic. They're not specific to me.

I know that my driving and irons are fairly good - my chipping and putting are poor so I had a lesson to rectify that. The pro was very good and gave me one thing on each to work on. When I play on Sunday I'll concentrate just on what he's told me.

With my woods and irons I'm going to concentrate on a nice smooth take away, better rhythm and better follow through (!).

My point is, read/watch too much and when you next play you won't know whether you're coming or going. You know your game - you know your weaknesses. I recommend you get a lesson or, failing that, try to play with a very good player and see if s/he can offer you some advice. That way it's specific to you.

I think the problem with reading tips in magazines and books is there is a danger of seeing something and thinking "yep thats summed my swing up" when in fact there are other issues going on. Then when that tip doesn't work you try something else until it gets to a point where you can't get back to the original swing which probably needed a single tweak by a pro.

On the point of overload, a good teaching pro won't try and do too much in one session preferring to work on the biggest problem and giving a couple pof pointers and maybe one or two drills. By keeping it simple it makes it a lot easier to go away and be able to focus clearly on what needs to be changed when practicing.

I dismiss the instruction pages as well. I remember seeing one that advised me to slightly hold the clubface open at impact to achieve whatever end it was they were trying to achieve.
I doubt anyone on here except our very low handicappers caould do that and not slice the rocks of it!

How the hell am I supposed to hit the ball like Tiger, Sergio or any other Pro FFSake! I'm 46, fat, unfit and not very supple - everything Alvaro Quiros isn't. No wonder he hits it further than I do.

Why would you take tips out of a book/mag/vid straight onto the course anyway. Surely these should be honed/practiced/dismissed etc on the practise ground. One swing though is all you need on the course , a trigger to start the swing :D

You're clearly reading the wrong books and watching the wrong Youtube vids :D
