Adjustment of club during round

I hate it when people answer a question with another question.
A simple yes or no would have sufficed.
The only equipment that you're not permitted to borrow or share is clubs (with an exception for partners sharing clubs). Everything else can be borrowed or shared.

Best not to look at them as changes - as new rules they make a lot, lot more sense in terms of how they are structured, written (language) and intended (less focus on precision where it's not particularly needed, ability to avoid penalty by 'undoing what can be reasonably undone' etc

Personally I expect about 50% of regular competitive club golfers to be able to apply the new dropping procedure by the end of year 1. Currently I estimate less than 1% have a sound working knowledge of rule 20!
The new dropping rule is discriminatory against tall people, just as the old rule was. My knees are further from the ground than my PP’s and probably the entire ladies section of my club. The proposed rule of 1” from the ground was better as it was the same for everyone. As such I have taken offence.😀

Have you looked at the various videos form the R&A/ USGA about the only person who appears to drop from knee height is the short lad!!

I too hink the knee height is a bit stupid because every physio I have ever seen reminded me to bend at the knee and not from the waist and I know for certain that bending at my side is likely to give me a muscle spasm.

I'm surprised that you can't judge knee height when your legs are bent. The R&A says that you only have to make a sensible reasonable effort the determine distances.

Yes possibly 14 clubs and a ruler so everyone drops from 12”.

Maybe they should have changed it to
Drop from anywhere between shoulder height and 1” from the floor but it must be dropped!

It’s up to the player then.

The objective was to have the dropped ball stay within the relief area, not roll out and require re-drop. Dropping from knee height contributes to that objective.
You can kneel down, sit down or even lay down, to drop the ball, provided it is dropped from your knee height.

Or even, if people find dropping from knee height too much trouble, or too unfair, perhaps just play the damn thing as it lies ... :)

(And ok, I know what's coming next ...)

My hand is about 15 cm above my knee when my arm is hanging loosely (no comments about knuckle grazing, thank you every much). There's not much bending to do to bring it to knee height.

It's such an unnatural position to drop from.
Does the current drop method result in the ball rolling more than 2 club lengths all that often?
Although you're dropping from a lower height, your target area is smaller so there could be just as many instances of the ball rolling too far.
Is it really making things easier or saving time...?
I'm not sure it does either.

Let's go back then to dropping over our shoulder. Now that was a truly natural position. :)

Seriously, yes the current method did lead to the ball rolling more than 2 club lengths irritatingly and time wastingly often.
The target area is not smaller but is exactly the same as before. The only difference is that the new rules have clarified and illustrated the semi-circle within which you drop.

I though that, under the new rule, that the ball couldn't roll 2 clublengths so, in effect, the area that the ball can stay in is smaller....if you're dropping into any sort of slope, unless the ground is soft, even from knee height you're going to get redrops..
I've been playing 25 years and it's probably happened to me no more than a few times.

Yes, the area in which the ball can stay in is smaller, but the target area - which I took to mean the area in which the ball had to hit the course - is the same as before.
