A Decent Golfer

14-18 Average Club player
10-14 Decent player
6-10 Good Player
3-6 Very good player
0-3 Excellent Player
0 - +3 Fantastic Golfer
Fair assumptions?
Ash!!

I would have to agree with Ash as i wouldnt class myself as a decent golfer. Not yet anyway. Will hopefully get better through time and effort.

Personally as a very average 9 handicapper that plays with a lot of low guys, I think;

Scratch and below = Decent

5 -6 and below = Good

7-12 = Average

Above that =Sh*te
;);)

The Wiktionary definition of decent is 'He's a decent saxophonist but probably not good enough to make a career of it'. So that's 99% of the forum out of contention:whistle:;golf that is not saxophany!

i think any plus golfer is awesome,o-9 is decent,10-14 is ok anything above is poor and anyone getting 2 shots on any hole should hang their heads in shame.

Depends on what people's definition of decent is but in my view I would say a bogey player is definitely a decent golfer. If you were going to sample all forms of golfers from the elite to total beginners that may only play once a year bogey players will be better than most. Unless of course you totally discount anyone that doesn't play a certain amount as you don't class them as golfers.

you have to play 150 rounds a year to be classed as a golfer anything less and your just out for a walk with your trolley.

That would pretty much rule out anyone with a family, a job or no life....
Are you having a laugh...

Thats an average of 3 rounds a week.....Iv no idea what climate your living in but you'll do well to get out 3 times a week in Ireland or the U.K during winter:(

Well it doesn't, but neither does your statement that to be a golfer you must average 3 rounds a week. I am guessing that a small proportion manage to get that many rounds in, and if you did you certainly should be pushing for a lowish single handicap playing that amount

There is no real answer to my question.

Someone once described a seventen year old, 17 handicap junior, as a decent young player. A decent 17 year junior IMO would play off 3 handicap or less.
Different folks/different strokes.

Justone. Yes I think Cat 2 or less is about right

I don't think it matters at the end of the day. We are all capable of "decent" rounds below our handicap and some of us drift into bandit territory with 42 points etc. If the question was what do you consider to be a consistent level then it is surely easier to quantify and the four categories Bob used seem appropriate

"Decent" isn't a quantifiable word so everybodies idea of what decent is will vary but, reading the posts here, it seems to equate very much to ones own ability. The lower your own handicap the lower the handicap of what you would consider a decent golfer to be, which is perfectly natural. :D

[h=2]Re: A Decent Golfer[/h]... is one who leaves the course with more balls than he started with.

:whoo:

firstly my comment was a bit tongue in cheek, but surly some one who takes the game seriously should be playing 2-3 times a week and could be classed as a golfer less than that and your some one who plays golf.I don't agree that the more rounds you play automatically makes you better if your happy scuffing it round in 100 every time you play that's fine and no matter how many rounds you play you don't improve but are happy thats fine, but this post was about driving and i still stand by my opinion that getting off the tee and into a good position is key to scoring low as well as having a well rounded game in all aspects iron play, chipping and putting,to your h/c analogy i play of low single figures but i have been playing over 35 years.

As it can't be quantified, I'd judge anyone playing off 10 and less as "decent" - or they are certainly capable of hitting decent shots regularly.

I went out for a game on my own one Christmas Eve and joined up at the third with a member I knew slightly.
At that time I played off 4 and he was 3.
We had a great game on an empty course both playing around par
When we had finished he stated that it was his third game that year.
That's a decent golfer.

decent is obviously subjective, to me a decent golfer is someone who understands the game properly, someone who repairs divots and pitchmarks doesnt walk on GUR and the rules of golf is a decent golfer regardless of handicap
