Anyone off of 18 is decent.
Anyone off of 13 is Good. 1 stroke per hole excluding par 3s seems fair.
Any one off of single figures is Really Very Good. The number of players that make it to single figures must be <10%
I, on the other hand, am complete sh1te, but I am having fun

I am a decent golfer, 10-15 is very good and single figures is excellent
in my opinion of course.

Anyone who can get around by hitting the ball off the ground and keep it generally straight
ie doesn't lose balls all the time or spend hours each round hunting for them

I agree, 18 is decent. Anyone that doesn't get more than 1 shot per hole is doing OK.

Someone can only be considered a decent golfer when they repair pitchmarks. Their own and any others they come across on the green, pace of play allowing.
For handicaps, 18 decent, 12 good, 6 very good.

Without wanting to offend anyone on here myself included, surely unless you can play to par (ie scratch) you are not a decent golfer, scratch thesedays is a long way from being very good therefore decent is probably correct, for the rest of us its merely differing shades of mediocrity. Hence the handicap system.

I fail to see how someone who will probably not break 100 every fourth medal [ie 18 handicap] could ever be described as a decent golfer.

Most golfers play well above there handicaps except for three or four rounds a year.

I think I understand your point, but surely an 18hc breaks 90 once every 4 (or whatever) rounds. 100 is 10 over his handicap.
I was just being pedantic (ish) with the numbers. Sorry if I confused the issue.

Anybody with a handicap at or below 19.1 is fairly good to very good, 19.2 and upwards is pretty poor to poor.

I know I probably shouldn't go there but......
.... why different standards for men and women here? Physical diffs are already catered for by virtue of shorter holes, SSS etc...
I reckon in amateur golf terms 18 is decent, single figures good, cat 1 very good.

Basically there are a lot less women playing golf than men and the gulf between womens handicaps at the lower end is much wider.
I have seen 6 handicap women playing County Golf.

OK, I see where you're coming from. I thought you were saying an 11 handicap female was as good as a 7 handicap male, which didn't make sense.
Personally, I wouldn't have split it out though. Decent is decent, decent for a girl is a different question. If low handicap women tend to be scarcer it just means you don't need to be as good to get into the county team as you would if you were a guy.
