You're an 8-iron from the green, dead center of the fairway and the flag is in the middle, no wind, it's flat and there's no hazards, just a plain simple stock shot to the middle of the green.....

describe your thoughts on making your set up, up to the point you pull the trigger....

Few simple practice swings trying to get a nice smooth tempo going on my swing, stand behind the ball and choose a spot roughly 2/3 inches infront the ball which i can line my clubface up to. Step up to the ball and using the clubface get my shoulders, hips and feet alligned to my target, quick glance up to the flag imagining the shot i want to play start my swing with thoughts and "smooth and tempo" and hopefully i make a good strike :)

similar but I'd aim 5 yards left of the flag as my stock shot is a five yard fade so to hit close to the pin I'd need to account for that. I also check my grip and have a little waggle to release tension

Pretty much same for me though like Tiger I have to bring the club up at a right angle and waggle full distance from left to right to release the tension. This stops me from hooking the ball as I was shutting the face at the top and keeping it shut on the way down.

a few half swings to limber up

club face and shoulders pointing very slightly right of target, feet pointing slightly left

My thought would be for the swing path to go out to the right hand side of the green and trusting my grip to release the club head bringing the ball back on target.

Look from behind, choose a line, clubface to the back of the ball, look up to confirm aim, set feet, one more look, pull the trigger.

Usual routine. Stand behind the ball and see the shot I am going to play. Make a practice swing to loosen up. Grip the club and step up to the ball. As I have learnt now on this site from some very informed people like justone I now understand why I always have my clubface slightly open on my irons. Get my stance just off to the right of the target and swing the club. Watch the ball fly through the air coming down over the pin landing 6 foot past then spinning back and into the hole......:whoo:I then stop dreaming and actually watch it come down 1 club short...:mmm:

8 iron or 7 iron, maybe I should go with the 8, or an easy slightly gripped down 7, nah go for the 8

setup, aiming slightly left then top it 20 yards or toe it right into the clag :)

Go through my pre shot routine. Stand behind the ball and choose where I want to land the ball on or near the green.

Step into my address position. Ball position slightly left of mid stance, weight favoring my left hand side. Take the club away inside, weight still over my left hand side.

Top of the back swing I'm centred over the ball. Once the club is set at the top start my downswing with a slight lateral shift of my hips towards the target, moving my weight progressivley onto my left hand side. Fire my hands through the impact zone then let everything go soft for a nice controlled finish.

Then watch the ball airmail the green and plug in the bunker behind

stand behind the ball
decide if I want a straight shot, fade or draw, high or low
picture the shot and the strength needed to land it on my chosen area
pick a spot about 2 feet in front of the ball along my target line
walk into position
square the leading edge of the club at right angles to my target line
square my feet, hips and shoulders to this line
one last look at the target
smooth takeaway and accelerating smoothly

watch the shot crisply leave the club and wish I could patent that shot it was so good.
move to the side slightly to see the flag as my ball covered it all the way

Phew! quite a lot when you write it down (all accurate apart from the last 2 lines:o)

Stand behind the ball, club in hand and check the target line visually - no pointing my club at it (never figured that one)! See where I want the ball to land and visualise the pure beauty of it in flight. Take one practice swing with my mantra "Short, Late and Through The Ball (stops overswing, creates lag, square at impact). Set my club behind the ball and square feet and shoulders taking care to ensure ball is dead centre in stance, one last look at my target and final thought is "hit it" as I have tended to be too careful with my approach shots and slow my tempo too much.

There is probably a heap of other thoughts whirling through my head but I try to shut them up - those damned voices

Allowing for the shape i hit....Stand behind the ball and pick something behind and to the right of the green...
Ball in the middle of my stance and weight favouring my front foot.
Line the club face up with a point a few feet in front of my ball on my ball starting line......I would be hoping for the ball to come down on the right edge of the green.....If i over cook the draw then im either down the middle or down the left but hopefull still on the green.

Before i would point the clubface where i wanted the ball to finish and aim my body and feet to the right but that wasnt working too well.

So now lately im aiming my club face where i want the ball to start and let my swing do the rest....Seems to be working so far.

Pull the 8, get lined up on a target behind the flag, pick small spot in front to line up on, relax, deep breaths to clear the head. smooth swing, and see what happens.
