8-iron to the green - can you describe your set up?

i take a practice swish if ive had to wait at my ball to play, otherwise if i just walked up to it, i will already have been visualising my shot and assessing just how far ive got left etc.

so i'll pluck the club out, check out the green, and step up straight away and hit the thing

Phil

Do most of the sizing up of the shot whilst walking towards it and will be 90% sure on what club and type of shot to hit. Drop the bag, have a quick squint at the lie and get the Bushnell out, give the flag a zap to confirm ydg.

Pull the 8iron, quick loosener swing behind the ball, line up the target. Step in, place club and have a look at target, take stance. Have a little "lift and waggle" and look at target once more. Back to the ball, pause and then whammo.......hold finish, twirl club and generally look smug.

Routines are great - but anyone else find they mess with your mind if you get out of kilter??

I have, subconsciously, taken on a little tug on the wrist of my glove when stood behind the ball before the shot. It's not an intentional part of my routine but if i miss it out and hit a bad shot I'm thinking that it could only be down to the lack of glove tugging!

You are on a very slippery path.

Did you remember to lock the front door?

If its a full 8? I will use a 7 with a half swing. Stand behind ball picture the shot whilst taking grip. Move to side of ball with the picture in mind (hopfully). 1 practice swing looking at the flag picturing the ball flying to the flag. Set up to the ball stance slightly open (as I need to clear a path for the club head, I try to keep legs and hips out of short shots. Hence the open stance). Shoulders square to target, clubhead square to target. Ball position for me is about 3" inside front heel (as with most shots) Weight just favouring front foot, but only a little. A last look at the target, quick waggle or to,(practise takeaway I suppose), ground the club then smooth half swing and away it goes. Funny how much writing it takes. For something that only take 15sec's or so to do. Most of the above is second nature and no thought goes in to it. Form the time I stand at the side of the ball to hitting it. Really had to think about what I did and this is about as close as I can get.

Not having a pop at anyone specific, but it is amazing how many replies to the question '8 iron to the green etc'respond with I would use a different club?

No distances are mentioned, so if it is a distance where you would hit an 8 iron, hit the 8 iron. If you only ever hit with a half swing, then surely the distance is that for a half swung 8 iron?

You walk up to the ball, it's an 8-iron from here..........

Stand behind the ball checking out the shot, (right or left bail out or whatever)
Lift the shaft to see the line over some sort of marking on the fairway
Place the clubhead behind the ball, aiming over the "thing" I've picked out.
Square off my stance, set my posture, check my grip is OK,
Then put the best swing on it I can.

After that, anything can happen.

I was thinking it was a full 8 iron as james saw it. I would not think oh this is a full 8 iron ok get the 7 out. I would always say ok half 7 for me. The 8 iron would never cross my mind. same with all the short irons.

I understand where you are coming from. My 8 iron will predictably go between about 110 and 150 yards, so consideration of taking a different club is fairly pointless!

Is this like a small boat that follows you around? or is the shot so sexy impure thoughts have jumped into your head?

Self gratification is completely pre meditated!! :-) No boats in sight, but then that could be because of my fading eyesight due the....ahem.....vicious circle!!!
