6 Iron distance

Playing at Walton Heath yesterday, got to the 17th a testing par 3 with what appears to be an island green from the tee. Short and you are in big trouble. I think it was playing about 170 from the tees we were off, but was downwind.
Two of the fit young lads I played with hit 7 irons. The other guy hit a 6 iron. Me? I'm an old duffer slowly losing my distance, so hit a 5 iron, although I made a point of teeing it up a little higher to get a bit more height on it. I hit the green and made par, two of the other guys made bogie. The scorecard doesn't paint pictures...
;) ;) ;)

Too right. Danny hit a 7, I didn't see Dominic's club, Jezz hit a 6 (I think) and Tony hit a 6. Birdie-chance mayhem....

I'd have hit a 5.

In reply to the OP that distance sounds just fine. What club you take doesn't matter one jot. As long as you can get close to long holes (par 4s) in two shots, you can play to single figures easy.

:)

For me distance isnt everything, it is consistancy. if you know how far on average you hit a particular club and you know the distance, you then make allowances for wind, elevation, temperature etc

For me a 7 iron is 135 yards, a 6 iron is 150 and a 5 iron is 165

So armed with my skycaddie, I can make a very accurate club choice
The only problem is putting the theory into practice

Now Leftie, here is one-up-manship!

I have hit a 9 iron 197 yards - into the hole!!

My only hole in one was something to tell my grandchildren and it was recorded in the local press.

However I don't think we have a 'distance' - the wind, growth, air and heat and of course, one's own flexibility, are all factors. Todays 6 is tomorrows 7 or even 8 and as has been said, it is the direction that is more important. Normally 5 yards short of the pin is a long putt but 5 yards right or left could be 'bucket and spade' time.

Slow news week. Actually we use to get a few in our local rag but it seems to have stopped. Either no-one is making aces anymore or they don't bother reporting it. Either way it is still a great achievement.

Did I tell you I hit 7 iron to a foot on that hole ;)

To the OP , sounds about right for a 6 iron for a shorter hitter :D

What really matters to me though is knowing how far I can hit it if I flush it. If I can possibly fly the back of the green into trouble then I'll probably go with less club. Nice to know the averages but the max distance is very important to me too
