5 iron v 5 wood

What is probably confusing you is that:

- hybrids are numbered like irons, but woods have a different numbering system and so they are not directly comparable;

- there is no industry standard for what number club has what loft, so one manufacturer’s 5 iron could be 26 degrees whereas another’s may be 24 degrees.

As a very general guide, a 3 wood could be 15 degrees, a 5 wood may be 18 degrees and a 7 wood might be 21 degrees. They tend to be odd numbers, but some manufacturers make a 4 wood.

On the other hand, with hybrids and irons, a 3 tends to be in the range of 19 to 21 degrees and they tend to move upwards in 4 degree steps or similar.

By the way, it’s not weird to play better on your own, as others watching you play is always going to put pressure on you to perform, even if only subconsciously, and that pressure often has a negative impact.

Welcome to golf! We all find it frustrating, but we all seem to come back the next week. Keep playing and you will improve. Hopefully you will join a club and get a handicap in due course ... but the main thing is to have fun. Good luck!

Thanks
I am confused about one thing.
My
5 wood is 18deg.
4 wood is 22 deg.
3 wood is 19deg.
But the 5 wood Big Bertha has a way bigger head than the 3 and 4 hybrids.
Are hybrids also called woods ?

Personally I believe you should completely ignore reference to loft; the weighting dynamics are completely different across irons, hybrids and woods - and that's before you consider different models and manufacturers!

Until you are good enough to know better from hitting a club, work to the generally accepted principles of a 5w = 3h = 3i in the hands of a competent golfer. Generally handicap golfers will struggle to get the best out of 3 &4i; which is pretty much why h were invented!

Without precisely defining 'rough' your other question can't be easily answered - and the equation can vary hugely between wet and dry grass. Dry and the normal answer is the h; wet and it's often a wedge! 5 wood can be an excellent club from some rough too.

Lovely sunrise.
Spent 2 hrs.
Hit 250 balls.
Getting a grip of the new technique now.
Damn addictive

Bloody hell, 250 balls! I usually stick with 50, even if I hit 100 I'm knackered by about 80.

250 balls, yeek hows the hands.

Best bet is to try to hit the 5 iron and 5 wood and see what works and what doesn't for you. I gave up a long time with 6, 5, 4 and 3 irons, I just find woods easier to hit.

Enjoy the game, it is great.

Had to stop at 250.
Back started aching all of a sudden around 240.
Got excited as my new grip and stance was finally working hence got carried away.
Nice to chat to fellow golfers.

What are the irons, the 5 wood and the 3h will produce pretty much the same result, would have been better off with a 3 wood really, matters not though, at least you've got something to work with for now...

I have Irons from 9 to 5 and 5 wood and 4 & 3 hybrids.

Did wonder difference between 5wood and 3 hybrid. ...
seems same distance and head angle and head shape and size.

250 balls without lessons is just 'grooving' swing faults.

I had a 2 hr lesson recently from a new instructor.
Plus about 4 lessons a few months ago from another.

Did all the ball hitting after the lesson.
Will be signing up for a package of lessons very soon.
Ta.
