Next Sunday I'm playing this 4-clubs + putter competion. So one is the putter but what about the others?

I can make my mind around these two options:

3-w, 5-i, 8-i, PW

4-i, 6-i, 9-i, SW

Has anyone played something like that before? Any advice?

Thanks

I played one of these a couple of years ago and went with your first choice. As long as you can hit your 3 wood from the fairway you will be fine. It will surprise you how well you can score with so few clubs. At my club the course record for years was set in our 7 club challenge, sadly the R&A said it could not be recognised due to the fact it was scored with 7 clubs.

I really don't understand why they would say that? If he'd carried a full set of 14, but only actually used 7, then that would be up to him... I don't understand why they care how many he had in his bag. Never heard of this before so I'm interested to hear the reasoning if you can remember it!

Back to the OP, I'd agree with option 1, the 3w, 5i, 8i, PW.

That's rubbish isn't it. Doesn't matter how many clubs are used it's still a record - unless it has to be in a qualifying comp.........

I'd want something in my bag that will get me onto the par 3's. At mine, we have 1 long one (5 iron), 3 medium (7 iron) and 2 short (9 iron). Chuck in a rescue or 5 wood and you're made.
The par 4's and 5's will look after themselves with almost any spread of clubs - it's the par 3's where you don't want to have to hit a 3/4 6 iron or blast an 8....

Great piece of advice Imurg.

Thanks a lot to everyone.

Apparently this competition won't have any hc or record value at our club either. So I'm very likely to score my PB on Sunday....

Also consider what the strong points of your game are ie- if you are not the best with fairway woods but OK with your driver you may be better putting your driver in esp if you are playing off forward tee's. I have some good results in 3 club+putter with Driver,6i + PW basically hitting it as close to green as poss then sorting it out

The point about par three's is valid, at ours PW works on two and 6i for the other

Agreed, that's exactly how I choose. If you've got the right clubs for the par 3s - and don't mess the par 3s up - you can score well as those clubs should be OK to cover the rest of the holes.

Funnily enough I have a 4 club comp this Saturday too. Mine's 3 clubs + putter though, so slightly different. I guess a Hybrid, 7 iron and PW will be the way to go, would people generally agree?

I have just got a 60* wedge (trialling it to decide if I want to buy it), should I possibly take that instead of the PW? Mind you, I havent used it on the course yet so dont know how far it will go..

jezster take pw at most you will hit 60 degree around 80 yards at the very most and more chance of thinning it if trying to give it a little more.
never played in a comp like this before. but would give rescue (19degree) 5iron 8iron and 52 degree a go

Thanks Wayman, I'll do that then, and take the lob wedge out on Sunday in my 4ball match, perhaps a little safer to use then :-)

Cheers for the advice.

What a fun morning! Finished the round, showered and now comfortably back at home waiting for the kettle to boil as I listen to the Liverpool match..

Great fun round and with only 4 clubs it meant there was no decision time each hole. There was pretty much only one club you could use in any given situation.

I felt I played well, especially to start with. Went round the front 9 in 21 and the back 9 in only15 with my only blob on the 18th :-( Had a 20 footer for 1 point, and left it an inch short, on the right bloody line too!!

All in all a good day though, 36 points so was the clubhouse leader when I left, so with only tomorrow's crew to come, I could be in for a top 10 finish :-)

Will definitely play this again, it's great fun.

Ours is in a couple of weeks I think, 3 clubs + putter, and it's played from the ladies tees.

I think I'll be taking driver, 7i and GW.
