Lost was in “ “ but surely judgement is subjective. Sorry and I know you are never wrong but how do different people know when they encounter it? If they KNEW when you encountered it players would not need to look!

Knowing exactly where a ball is is not the same as knowing the area in which a ball is. My use of encounter is related to the latter when two balls are involved.
But subjectivity is very difficult to get 'right'.

Sorry to be a pedant, however the balls are “lost” so the players looking do NOT know how close they are to each other! How is “same area” determined? Is it 2 metres/ 5 metres. Usually the rules are specific but don not think they are are in this case.

I don't believe the rules are ever specific on issues like this. My reading is if there is significant overlap in the search areas then there is only one 3 minute limit although the start time may vary slightly for each ball when one ball is thought to be slightly further from the hole (that ball's 3 minute window starts slightly earlier). If you want more guidance than this, I suggest you take your question to a Ruling Body.

As a rule of thumb, I would consider searches to be simultaneous if the players searching an area thought it just as likely to find one ball as the other.

I asked this question on here a couple of months ago and Golf Monthly used it in the Rules section of this month’s magazine. I got a head cover and three Pro V1 balls ?

I had my question in G M Mag around 3 years‘ ago.
Well done but that is inflation s I only received 3 Pro V1’s ! Very generous from GM in both cases as I am sure neither of would have been any wiser if they had not sent us the gifts.

I do read the mag, so I may have noticed, but yes, I wouldn’t have minded them using it without any gift … so a generous bonus.
