Out today to play a few. No going very well as I really should be off the course thanks to a dodgey elbow but had it strapped up today to see how it felt in prep for playing next weekend at the Irish outing.

Par 4 hit a poor drive. 18* hybrid sliced high and right about 160yards. 170ish to an uphill pin. Duffed it 20 yards into heavy rough. Duffed the next another 50 yards. Then PW striaght out of the centre at the pin. 2 foot putt for bogey.

Another par 4. This time melt driver striaght up the center. 140 to the pin. Hit 8 iron staight out the centre pitched pin high but rolled out down a small slope into light rough at the back of the green. Played risky flop chip as the pin was quite close and I was playing onto a downhill slope so bump and run was not a great option. Ball popped striaght out and rolled just past the cup finishing about 3 feet past. 1st putt lipped out leaving a 6" tap in for bogey.

WTF is with this game!

Welcome to my world! :D

Quick run down of the 1st hole (par5) I played last week against a 7 h/capper kid....

He thins a drive about 230, then hooks a 3-wood into the rough, I find it with about 10 seconds to go (he was looking nowhere near where it was) he then chops a 7-iron out of the rough and it bounces up to the front edge about 50ft from the pin... he lags a crap one to 10ft.... and sinks the par!

Meanwhile, I hit a nice drive about 275, can't make the green so lay up with an easy 8 iron bang in the middle of the fairway, left myself a (nicely struck) wedge which ends up pin high left of the pin by 10ft but it's off the green by 2ft, I bump a 9-iron 3ft past the pin and miss the putt for a feckin' bogey!!!!

GET A GRIP was all I could keep telling myself else I'd helicopter my clubs!

JustOne - to be fair to the 7 handicapper, he took three shots from being in the rough where you took three shots from being 2 ft off the green. He hit the green in regulation and you didn't.

Sounds almost like a perfect anecdote to tell people about how important the short game is. Drive for show and all that..

Yes and No, it's hard to consistently scramble 18 pars, without a decent long game you put far too much pressure on your short game.

Drive for show and putt for dough? Yes.... you need both!
