What are your 2026 golfing targets? These can be as specific or as broad as you like. And I'm sure we'll have the usual 'have fun and keep breathing just like last year' so feel free. 😁

For me - I have never previously believed single figures was a real possibility for me, but now - I'm not sure I want to make it an actual target but I do believe it's probably possible, for the first time. One thing holding me back is my home club's low course ratings, so if I'm ever going to do it, I'll need to be putting a lot of scores in at away courses. (This is something I've already been doing.)

The most important thing I need to do is improve my chipping. It has been poor for quite some time. In my last two rounds I changed a little bit in my set-up and it worked a treat, although it remains to be seen whether the firm (frozen) ground at the moment is simply masking the chunks. I need to find a way to fit chipping practice into my schedule. The chipping area at my club is poor, which doesn't really inspire me to go down to the club and use it, but I may have to just force myself to do it.

Secondly - I've considered myself to be a decent putter over the last two years, but I think if I'm being critical there is room for improvement there. Again, my practice has fallen down somewhat - I think my stroke is technically sound, but I let myself down in green reading and judgement. Some days I just don't get the speed right at all - some days I'm playing far too much break that isn't there - other days I think they're not going to break much and they do. I do find it hard to improve my judgement simply by practicing on the putting green. But I have to try. I'm currently a bit of a streaky putter where I'll have the odd day I'm holing everything, but I rarely have a round without a three-putt somewhere.

I managed to average 55.4% fairways hit last year, which I think is a pretty good average - I'm keen to push my distance up a little bit, but this is a gradual process of trying to add more speed. I also hit 31.8% greens in reg - not bad but I was aiming for a third, so this can be pushed up a little bit more. Up and downs was 26.2%, so as mentioned, the chipping wasn't there as I'd like this to be a third as well.

For those who are single figures, is it realistic to achieve this with 33.3% greens in reg and 33.3% up and downs? My shaky maths suggests it's viable as long as I have no more than 1 three-putt on a GIR, and no more than one double bogey (or two doubles and one birdie), leaving me around 8 over par... although at my home course 8 over is like 11 differential so will need to be slightly better there. Anyway, those are the starting blocks.

The short version:
  • fit chipping & putting practice into my schedule
  • aim for 35% greens in reg average
  • aim for 35% up and down average
  • limit doubles to one or two maximum!

I just want to have fun and keep breathing 😂.

Hopefully become a member again somewhere although potential house move might scupper that.

Be nice to get to single figures again but that would be a real Brucie Bonus if I join somewhere again.

Hoping to take my Dad for a night or 2 away golfing but might not be possible

Absolutely mate, I posted an image here a while ago of GIR per handicap and a 9 handicap average is 38%.

So well within your grasp.

My own goals: I have 6 of them but the last 2 are the most important to me.

- Join a club and get back to being a member once I move into a new job role meaning living back in my own house full time instead of away during the week.

- Play regular comps at said club and use it as a way to meet new people.

- minimum of 2 full practice sessions a week equal split long and short game (in summer try to double that)

- see if I can get to down to Scratch

-Just enjoy the process, meeting people and having fun.

-Most important goal play for rounds with Mrs M and make the most of the time together

I just wanna play!!!

The course is still iced over and it's only going to be -5 tonight....

Once I get out there it'll be business as usual..
Play, enjoy, play more.....scores matter but they are what they are...
I'd like the Index to stay around where it is now but it will be what it will be
As long as I enjoy playing I'm happy..

Ditto
Similar issues.....gone on nearly as long
Back to hospital again this month, see where we go next
Feel for you moogie. I am waiting for another consultant referral. Went to nhs physio 3 years ago and they trying to send me there again but we have 50 week wait in my part of the world.

Hopefully in the next month or so I'll have figured out my bag....the back end of 2025 has seen a real struggle in the area of transition from irons through hybrids to fairways...this is close to being sorted, have a 7 wood on the way and I may even end up replacing my 6iron with an appropriate hybrid or maybe even a 9 wood. New wedges will also be purchased in the spring.

Going to almost certainly become a "range member" at Felixstowe Ferry....will cost me £200 for the year for unlimited balls...looking back at my credit card statements, I paid out £200 in credits my my current practice venue of choice Ufford Park, but Ufford has become increasingly busy and noisy over the last couple of years since they've introduced ball tracking/launch monitor systems and the ability to play range based games on the system....its especially chaotic during any school holiday period, or Saturday afternoon...and even weekdays it is often a struggle to get a bay.

Felixstowe also has proper practice chipping greens, another grass range area where you can use your own balls as well as me getting a percentage off beers and food in the clubhouse as part of the range membership. Also if I become a familiar face at the club, it may be beneficial in the future should i decide to consider my current membership options.

Hopefully this might lead to better more concerted practice....hell i might even take a few lessons...with the view of reducing my handicap...would like to get back well into single figures and if I can drop my index from 9.1 down to 6.5 (as a stretch objective) by the end of August then I'll be a very happy golfer.

And all the gym sessions? Is the new role part time? 🤪

Every role I do is part time 😉
Plus the benefit of the gym work being done during working hours means golf practice is in my own time 😊

I never go to the gym in my own time always make sure I’m being paid to be there, except for weekends I had to bite the bullet and do that in my own time which annoys me I should be paid 🥳😂

1) To enjoy it and find a way to play with some new people.
2) Single figures H.I.

Although the clubs I’d like to join as a member near me (S. London) are pretty pricy to join, but I guess it’s the best way to complete (1).

Regular Friday lunchtime finish so I can smash a few rounds in before the weekend officially starts to get a bit more value from my membership.

Also want to try snd get the wife playing a bit.

I actually had a little op/procedure last year, but 6 months later I was back in same situation. So got back in touch with surgeon secretary last September, appointment 14th Jan, but no idea if this is just gonna be a sit down chat with 1 of his team, and literally start all over again, or something more positive.

But to answer the thread question.

Just hopefully get back playing again. Really enjoyed regular golf last year, at new club, whilst it lasted. But not really able to practice, which I always actually enjoyed.

I got down to my lowest of 4.6 this last summer.....a terrible Fall has me back up to 7.8. Back to around 6 is fine with me. My short chipping is horrendous and always has been. One good shot, one crap shot. I've also gone with a new driver up at 12 degrees which seems to suit my slower swing speed better. Consistency in swing is my motto.

Also need to get down to maybe just one club membership. Although something I've noticed about rejoining at my first club last month.....it doesn't seem to be as happy a place as it was before I left 4 years ago and they got rid of the rollups. Something to be said for organized rollups.........

TBH I think from what I saw this year of your game that you can achieve your main objective without too much difficulty - and yes - if you achieve bullets 1, 2 and 3 your SF handicap can cope with 2 doubles. BTW - you'll have seen from my game at Puttenham that you don't need to be that great to have a SF handicap - you just need to do your 2 and 3,.

I’m currently going through a swing change, in recent months my handicap has increased from 13 to 15.

So my first goal is to embed this swing change by spring and then get my handicap down to 13 again by July. After that, try to get in the 12s by the end of the year.

I also want to score in the 70s a few times. I’ve only managed it once, my normal score is 85-88, a decent score is 82-84, and so I’d love to push it a bit and have a couple in the 70s.

To do this I really need to improve my short game. It can be really good, but I also go on runs where I can’t chip for toffee, duffing all over the shop and then getting nervous and rattling it past the hole. Easily costs me 5-6 shots per round. So I’ll spend some time on that too.
