Thought I would start a thread for the U.S. Open this week as can't see general one open anywhere, should be a great week and the soft conditions make it intriguing but I still think you need to be on the fairway regardless of the softness.

Here's excerpts from my preview

Henrik Stenson - I have earmarked Stenson for this week for a long time, if you look at the past winners at Merion they have all been ball strikers of the highest order. Stenson currently sits 2nd in Ball Striking (1st of those in the field), 3rd in Total Driving, 1st in Driving Accuracy and 3rd in Greens in Regulation (1st of those in the field). Those statistics show the make up of a player who will find Merion very much to his advantage as it will be put emphasis on those facets of the game rather than being a glorified putting contest as many tournaments tend to become stateside. Of course, he will need to sharpen up around the greens but it is noted that his best performances in that area have been on courses like Sawgrass which require solid ball striking to contend. He has every chance to improve his best U.S. Open finish of 9th this week, patience will be the key.

Justin Hicks - Michael Thompson, Kevin Chappell, Gregory Harvet and Ricky Barnes are surprise names from the top 5 of the last 4 U.S. Opens, there has in fact been a surprise package in the top 5 or 10 at most U.S. Opens and Justin Hicks is my idea of this year’s contender. He is coming to Merion on the back of a season’s best finish of tied 6th at TPC Southwind; he also has decent form on similar par-70 layouts in previous seasons. He finished tied 18th at Hilton Head, tied 27th at Copperhead and tied 15th at Waialae this year and is ranked 12th in Driving Accuracy , 18th in Greens In Regulation and 8th in Proximity To Hole. He also showed a much improved putting game last week so could be one to keep your eye on this week in regard to a serious surprise package.

Thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated

what i cant get over is the odds on the winner! everyone bar tiger was above 25/1 yesterday! that just seems mental to me!

I think it is two fold, clearly the bookies fear Tiger after being taken to the cleaners over him at Doral and Sawgrass this year so they are pricing him out of most golf punters plans but by doing so they relying on big hitters to back him which means they need balance the books by offering attractive prices. The issue is that there are negatives about all of those who are considered likely challengers to Woods hence there is no 10/1 player that they fear, the worst price I have seen is Donald who should be double his price in truth

Bubba, Johnson and Colesarts playing together, that should be interesting.
All we need now is an average forum driver to make up four ball.

That could be a long round if they start knocking it in the rough on a few holes, DJ is one of my favourite golfers but couldn't put an argument forward for him this week, maybe for Muirifield though

Watched the story of the US Open 2010 last night, it was painful watching him fall apart at Pebble Beach. A left handed duffed shot followed by a duffed flop shot, what was his caddy doing!

I was half watching that too whilst putting the finishing touches to my preview, I remember the late, late night watching it unfold live, his caddy had a mare that day, it was J.P. style caddying :smirk:

I think the same rules apply for US Open courses and Muirfield
It seems the rough is up at Muirfield which very much makes it a drivers course. My outside bets are for the straight drivers Franny Molinari etc to do well. Tiger found out, just like Nicklaus did in 1972, that you can't play safe with an iron and win at Muirfield.

Fair point, all my ten players in my preview are straight hitters for this week, its not just the rough to contend with at Merion but a fair amount of tree trouble.

I'll be very surpised if a shorter hitter wins this week, with the course being saturated it will play very long. The bombers will have a real advantage.

Agreed, but straight and a decent putter. 80/1 is stupid odds for someone of his talents.

Plus, unlike a lot of the Europeans, if he's in with a chance on Sunday, I don't think he'll bottle it!

Definitely, if you look at his last 5 starts he has progressively got better in the way he has putted (except memorial) and driven it so he is arriving to Merion with his game going in the right direction unlike Rory, Luke, Westwood, Watson, Oosthuizen, Dufner & Kaymer who are all ahead of him in the betting

I think there are holes that will play very long but I wouldn't expect a bomber to win, I think a Stenson type player who hits it long with a 3-wood with accuracy will be more likely than a Bubba type bomber

Spot on! I'm with Stenson to 3-wood it all way round and if it's raining I think he'll still do well. Bad weather will work well for Luke and GMac in my opinion. Can't recall Tiger winning in bad weather...... ??

I am sure he has won an event in bad weather but not sure about a major, G-Mac was in my thoughts but I just wonder if he might have peaked with his back to back wins in May?

He didn't exactly shine in the last Open at Muirfield when it was wet and windy

I think Woods is a shocking price and a great price depending on your view point, shocking when you consider he is 5 years without a major and conditions don't look likely to suit, great when you consider he was 7/2 a few weeks ago and has been by far the best player this season.
