2013 U.S. Open Thread: Chat, Predictions and Comment

Well he won at hilton head and played well in the majors last year. When he one the US Open in 2010 he won the welsh open earlier in the year then went on to win so i think he's got a chance. When ever he gets on a course that suits his eye he always plays well. Take tigers challenge at sherwood at the end of the year, he's won it twice in the last three years.

And as i say when the pressure is on he plays well, he loves to soak it up and us it to spur him on.

Yeah I completely agree with you, I since he is coming to Merion with a mindset to win similar that he had before Pebble Beach which is why I think he will either win or not place.

I've gone slightly mad this week and backed 5 players for this.

Dustin Johnson @50/1 ew main bet
Matt kuchar. @ 22/1 win
Nick Watney @ 100/1 ew
Bill Haas @ 80/1 ew
Mannassero @ 66/1 ew

My head is hurting just reading my selections and goes against my usual punting strategy but hey ho.

Some clown on the BBC Sport has just posted this cracking comment ......

"As a golfer who plays off 2 I am shocked and appalled by the current course set ups - too much emphasis is put on low scoring and birdies. This is the easiest US Open course I've ever seen and if I failed to break par I would storm of the course in a fit of rage."

I saw that as well, what an absolute clown. I played with my club pro and a local touring last week, and our club pro failed to break par at our home course and the touring pro shot 62 (9 under par) so it shows the difference in levels between a club pro and a touring pro let alone a 2 handicapper and touring pro

Things for the armchair ref to look out for:

Slow play: The USGA have said of this years US Open...

This year every player in the group has to have a ball in play before the group in front of them is off the green, or they will be considered out of position.

"As soon as a group looks like it may be getting potentially out of position, they will be put on notice even before they’re out of position that they’re on the verge.”

Anyone see the Preview show on Sky last night? They were talking about the rough and apparently the USGA wanted Fairway and then 4 1/2" of rough !!

The folks at Merion pushed back saying that they didn't want a situation where a player was on the fairway but unable to hit the shot as there was 4 1/2" of grass around the shaft, which is fair enough. They came to a compromise by adjusting one of their mowers so that it cuts at 1 1/2" on one side and 4 1/2" on the other - I hope they don't drive it the wrong way round!

Yeah i seen that when the euro tour was delayed the other day. Its the only machine of its kind in the world. The amount of equipment they had was amazing. Just goes to show what it takes to put on an event like this.

Does anyone know why there isnt a shot tracker on the PGA website?

Placed all my bets this morning;

Bubba 80-1
Horshel 80-1
Oosty 66-1
Ogilvy 150-1
Spieth 140-1

And then seeing as though i was going to work, i put a few 3ball bets to check during shift, but its no where near as exciting without shot tracker

Sounds like the rough is as brutasl as was expected. Keegan Bradley just missed a fairway with an iron off the tee, was wedge length into the green and chose to chip out sideways!

Proper viewing times for a change - Augusta take note.

I see the unfortunately named Ryan Yip has started with a double bogey, I hope it wasn't a 3-putt :D

As it should be. All this talk of technology spoiling the game. All they have to do is narrow the fairways and grow the rough, simples..
