2013 U.S. Open Thread: Chat, Predictions and Comment

Had a re-think. Ignoring impact of weather. 8 of the last 10 winners have been first timer major winners (at least I think so). On that basis: US winner - Sneds or Koooooch. Europen winner - Stens, Luuuuuuke or Rosie.
Failing that - it'll be the Tiger Show.

That could be a long round if they start knocking it in the rough on a few holes, DJ is one of my favourite golfers but couldn't put an argument forward for him this week, maybe for Muirifield though

I'd disagree with you on DJ's chances this week. It's a very tight course where a lot of pros will be hitting long irons off the tee and I think that is one of Dustin's stronger attributes. 50/1 on Dustin is certainly value in my book.

I hope you are right and certainly if you look at some of form ie TPC Southwind, Cog Hill they are tight enough courses, I just worry that he is too liable to blow up like he did at Augusta, but yeah 50/1 about him or 33/1 about Donald, no contest for me DJ every day.

Watched the story of the US Open 2010 last night, it was painful watching him fall apart at Pebble Beach. A left handed duffed shot followed by a duffed flop shot, what was his caddy doing!

I was half watching that too whilst putting the finishing touches to my preview, I remember the late, late night watching it unfold live, his caddy had a mare that day, it was J.P. style caddying :smirk:

since when did Caddys play the shots:rolleyes::whistle:

Tiger for me all the way.....he'll 3w and stinger it till the weekend when the weather improves, then he'll move up a gear.

I also feel Lee Westwood might be just about to shine;)

I think it was more a case that he should have stepped in and said slow down and think about it before you lash away.

It wasn't playing the shot which the problem, it was the choice of shot. He may be hated around these parts but Steve Williams would not have let his player hit a shot wrong handed when they're in contention of winning a major. And definitely would not have let him have another go less than 5 seconds after fluffing the first shot!

As a punter to certain extent I agree with you but, I spoke to Billy Foster about this and Mcilroys collapse and he said its very hard for a caddy to dictate to the player what shots to take on and when to play safe. He also said all of the caddys felt the amount of stick JP took over Mcilroy was over the top.

I'm just whittling down my selections to 2 or 3

I would agree that the stick JP got over the Augusta back nine in 2011 was over the top as it was Rory's putting as much as his strategy that him in trouble that day. I do think JP isn't a strong enough caddie for Rory and he needs someone who will aid his course and round management better as Rory just seems to have one mindset and that is attack, attack, attack, which is fine in some circumstances and produces runaway victories like Congressional and Kiawah but it also produces high numbered rounds too so my opinion is that if he wants consistency then he needs to address that

I think the only person to blame is Rory. The caddy is only there for advice.

Getting back on this years open I've just been on oddschecker and seen Lee "bottler" Westwood is a shorter price than Dustin :)

Just had the US Open 2011 film on, it's easy to forget how good McIlroy was that year with all the issues he seems to have at the moment. I doubt it will be this week but I hope he gets back to that form soon

Single greatest performance I've ever seen on a golf course (I didn't see Tiger at Pebble Beach). Just stunning ball striking and a guy in total control of every facet of his game, he was playing a different game to the rest of the field that week. When Rory's on, only Tiger has the game to beat him but he'd need to be on it too. That's the day we're all waiting for. Hope Rory finds his mojo soon.

As for this week, the weather makes it really difficult to call. I can't see a European winner, even though I've gone for GMac in the Predictions thread, and I can't pick which of the Americans has the best shot. Might go e/w on Michael Thompson. Not sure what he's at now but he was 175/1 last week.

And so to Donald, which is unbelievable really, he should 66/1 not 33/1-40/1

Generally 125/1 about Thompson, not a bad shout really

Just got some coupons from the bookies. Fancying an outside bet on someone like Stallings, Hoffman, Moore, Streelman all from 100/1 upwards.

Think I'll stick a couple of quid e/w on Manassaro, Zach Johnson and Watney.

Was going for Gmac but think he'll win the Open.

How do we see Sergio performing this week amid all media attention and possible crowd heckling around Tiger.Has come back into form over past year, but mentally can he perform this week. His focus must have been affected,no one seems to rate his chances, and he does not seem positive.

I think he will do well to make the weekend in truth, in my eyes he was always asking for trouble when he started make comments that felt like he was saying he had no question marks over his own behaviour etc.. I have always felt Garcia gets away with a lot of bad behaviour and sportsmanship in the european press whereas Tiger (quite rightly at times) is hammered by press all over the world.

Got to be G-Mac for me. I think the course will suit him and he always steps up when the pressure is on. Got him at 25/1 £5 each way, first 6 places.

Tbh doesn't matter who you put on as long as its not tiger your gonna get good odds.

I think from a pure courses for horse point of view, G-Mac is right up there, my only unknown is whether he has peaked with his form in May and might go amiss this week, hard to know, I have wagered a couple of ££'s on him to win only as think he will either win or be outside the top 5 this week
