2 Handicaps

yeah any golf days (society) ive played in you tend to get 3/4 handicap,as you are playiog off the yellows.

More evidence of the reality of living in a beautiful but harsh country.
Never played off 3/4 anywhere, ever.
I don't go further North than Yorkshire....I now know why.

I have to agree with Imurg here...In my eyes a handicap is a handicap full stop....Whats the point in coming in with 25 points off say 12 and winning a society and getting cut by them......If you send the card back to your club they probably wouldnt even use it......
One handicap should be enough for both and if on the occasion standard scratch is broke then regardless whether its a win or not the card should be sent back to your club.

Societies are populated by golfers with official handicaps and those without official handicaps and therefore providing "Society handicaps" for all members makes it easier to run the monthly society competitions.
Societies are there to ensure non members can play this wonderful game in a competitive manner.

If all members of the society are happy with the handicap system then there no major problem.

an advantage of society handicaps is that they are more reactive, move faster - up and down.

in most societies the aim really is to level the playing field (and you can never play off a handicap higher than your national)

I guess so. However, the society days I play in are far from a level field anyway, 'cause you always get some unofficial 20 h'cap playing to single's.

It's pretty pants to play well (under my h'cap) and see the dozen ProVs go to some schmuck who played off 6 at school and thinks 24 is his standard.

Then again, I'm not a society regular, if I was, I'd take an interest in the way things are done. I can't however see how anyone can play off less than their real h'cap. Bring the bandits down and leave the RGs (real golfers) be.

I effectively have 2 handicaps. My regular playing partner and I play in as many handicap qualifiers as we can and I currently play off 15.5 and he is off 22. Last year, I tended to win most of our friendly matches and they just weren't as competitive as they might have been. In order to sharpen us up a bit, we now enter every round into a software package that calculates our handicap after each round (I think they do this or similar in the US). My "friendly" handicap has come down to 13.3 - his is still 22 and the matches are almost always quite close.

and......last Thursday 79, yesterday 99. I not only have two handicaps, I seem to have two personalities on the golf course. Is anyone else this inconsistent? As soon as my rhythm goes, everything seems to go..

I need two handicaps. One for every course ever built (more or less) and the other for mine off the white tees. It's not about the length (I play the longest holes as 5s anyway) it's the placement of the tees.
I played yesterday with 2 drawers of the ball (good players) and commented on their ability to use drivers on the long draw holes. Without even asking for a comment, one of them replied, "well you can't play half this course off whites with a fade...."
QED, I rest my case.

I should be off 8 off yellows and 16 off white. Put me anywhere else and 12 would be a good average.
I wonder why I play off 12? :o
