It's actually in the rules :- 10-1 & 10-2 cover both matchplay and strokeplay (stableford is strokeplay by definition !)

Strictly speaking the honour is based on the draw on the first tee, then gross scores thereafter, providing someone wins a hole outright. If two or more people tie, the honour does not change, even if that means the highest score retains it.

I have a 'Tee Toss' app on my iphone but would NEVER dream of using it in a medal or match.

Honour on the first is by ballot. Magic tee, odd/even, what ever, but by ballot.

In medal/stableford competitions we go from the order on the start sheet. In matchplay, we toss a coin or do tee in hand etc. Socially, we tend to just play "ready golf" i.e. whoever is ready first will go. Saves any hold ups.
