Remember everyone you are playing with/against had to play their first comp sometime and was probably as nervous as you will be and they got through it. Enjoy it the best you can. Good luck.

Hi guys,
I'm relatively new to this great game and am playing in my first competition on saturday, quite nervous, any tips?

Enjoy it do not try to think about it. It's a real good opportunity to meet new people and play with people you normally would not.

Also if you new you should still have an higher handicap so you play a blinder you never know.

Just watch the etiquette - standing still during shots, not walking on other peoples lines, helping others look for golf balls, congratulating good shots by others etc.

Deep breath on the 1st and think 'swing slowly'.

Do what i do i walk up to the tee thinking im the best player ever and all the others must be shi----g themselves playing me,always play with a smile and enjoy.

Be courteous especially if your not having a great day. Remember your etiquettue and if you have any questions regarding a ruling ask before you do anything. Its perfectly natural to feel nervous and it might help if your club has a practice ground or even a warm up net to get there early and hit some balls. Try and relax and have fun. The worse that will happen is you'll get 0.1 back on the handicap

It's a stableford competition so I guess if I have any 'blow up' holes its not the end of the world! I played 18 today and shot 90, if I get anywhere near that i'll be very pleased, my handicap is 22

Get it past the ladies tee.
I can't begin to stress how hard it is to score on a hole when your pants are round your ankles.

A friend of mine told me.

I remember my first comp; picture this. Nervous as hell....
2x 4 balls waiting behind, my tee shot went 50 yds left into a hazard, a guy behind said " I've been a member here for 25yrs and I've never seen that before". I turned around, smiled and said " you have now".

Playing off 18 then I went on to score a respectable 32 points. Motto: Its a marathon not a sprint, concentrate on the one's in front, not behind.
Most of all, enjoy and good luck.
Regards
Huddy

Windy, welcome to the forum.

I would try and play each hole as a one hole challenge rather than tie them all together. That way you dont get carried away with a good par/birdie or disappointed with a big number.

Yep.
Think very carefully before you launch your driver/4 iron/ putter. You don't want to knock anybody out on your first day.
Also, try not to fart at the top of somebody elses backswing. That never goes down too well.

Other than that, enjoy yourself.

;)

Some good advice there also dont forget to get there in plenty of time have a swing do some putting and a chipping if you can. nothing worse than turning up late and having to rush.

My advice would be to swing easy, don't try too hard with distance impress your playing partners with accuracy, relax and enjoy your game, If you do start to have a stinker try to brush it aside and remember that your opponents all have off days.

Good luck.

Just stride confidently up to the 1st tee, introduce yourself by grabbing one of your playing partners by his balls and kissing him full on the mouth.

Then announce "I've got a titleist #2 gents, have a good game"

They will be so stunned that they won't notice what you have done for the first 6 holes!! :D
