Not long after joining a club and getting a handicap I entered a comp that was a Stableford with a shotgun start. On the morning we got there, due to overnight rain all the holes had gone to temporary greens. There was a change of format to 3 ball Texas scramble with the original drawn 3 balls becoming the "team". I was with a people I didn't know. One guy was really nice the other a cat 2 player who could hit the ball miles was not sympathetic to my inability as a high handicapper. As we had to take at least 5 drives each I really needed to take the ones that were reasonable as they occurred, but the cat 2 player insisted on taking his monster drives early on. By about the 6/7 th hole me and the other guy was saying we needed to take some of my drives ( I had only taken 1 on a par 3 where I was the closest.) By this time my nerves on the tee were getting worse and so were my shots. With 4 holes to play I needed to take 3 of them... my confidence was shot to pieces and ended up taking a mid iron on a Par 4 just to get it on a fairway, unfortunately on the final hole I put it in the drink.
A fun day had turned into a nightmare and It took quite a while to get my confidence back and enjoy playing in comps at the club.

Selected by my firm to play for a team against Barratt Developments at Muirfield (because Sir Lawrie Barratt wanted a game at Muirfield). When we got there we were told that we could play singles or foursomes. It was decided we'd play foursomes (because that is what Sir Lawrie wanted). I played partners with a 25 handicapper who was having an off day. I got no idea at all as to what it was like to play the course properly. That was 36 years ago. I'm still scarred by the experience.

Back in the day, around 2001, with handicap tumbling from 26 to 15 when suddenly and totally out of the blue came a bout (for over 3months) of the shanks. It nearly made me give up forever as if I was hitting an iron, almost any iron, it was 75% likely that it would be a Barclays.

Still scars my soul to this day.

Having a migraine come on in the middle of the round. Always seems to happen when I'm playing miles away from home too. Not good.

Hawkeye and I turning up at Maidenhead in the Nike matchplay. Got done by a dog licence and we were lucky to get away with that. The annoying thing was I was shocking and he wasn't far ahead of me but our opponents were something like -1 better ball off mid-handicaps. Never wanted to get off a course so fast

I've only ever had the funny vision thing a couple of times. It's normally a very sharp pain in one eye and the back of my neck (always same side for both), and the worst ones are accompanied by nausea as well.

Stood between two senior men coming to fists in the middle of the 18th fairway.

I mean, honestly. It's just golf!

Pretty much a replica for me. Still scarred, and my ball striking is nothing compared to what it was. Doubt I will ever get it back either. Come close to giving up playing very often!

Rocked up to a local course to play an open with moogie and wayman from the forum...only to discover the green keeper had sanded the greens that morning. Almost needed a rake to have a chance.

Ended up winning the open mind, so every cloud and that :p

First tee, about 20 people watching, all goes silent, mishit it off the toe, straight into a house about 50 yards to my right, hit a smash and a dog barking like mad.

Just wanted the a hole in the ground to swallow me up.
