Young driver insurance… demystify the mystic

Yes, Seat came in at £958 with telematics using the same vague details.

I think it’s mainly the Leon that gets modded.
Did you compare with you as tha main driver and him added on.
Some companies will do this and he still gets no claims.

Or they did a few years ago as did this with my eldest.

Just be careful with ‘fronting’ as this is illegal.
For those who aren’t aware, this is where a parent (or other experienced driver) is named as the main driver and the newbie is a 2nd driver to reduce premiums. In reality the parent hardly ever drives the car and the newbie is the proper main driver. Can lead to policy being invalid.

I didn’t know this.
I probably used the car more than she did and I’m going back 10 years so things may have changed since then.

As an addition to the Fronting...in the event of a wreck the insurance company can inspect the car and if they find things more likely to be found in a teenager's car than an adult's they may cancel any cover if they believe Fronting is being operated...

I know when I did it years ago that we put her on my car rather than getting her own car to start with.

I probably drove it more than she did.

I wasn’t aware it was illegal.
Every day is a school day
My wife works in motor insurance complaints(mainly the exec stuff now, but sees it all)
She has seen countless claims and policies declined and cancelled as a result of fronting.
The added kicker is that you have had a policy cancelled by an insurance company, and it’s something you must declare when trying to get motor insurance after that point in time. It can cause insurance companies to decline to insure you or at the least increase your premium dramatically. If you don’t declare that at the time of application for insurance when they find out, they will either skyrocket the premium or possibly cancel that policy as well.

Thinking about this. Why does he not have a Provisional licence already (according to the web available from 15 years 9 months). He just cannot drive a car on it until he is 17.
He does have a provisional license.

But if I used the details from that it would show he’s still 16 and prevent me getting exploratory quotes.

On a side note, I’ve found a lovely Ibiza 1.0 FR in white that seems quite rare in the “non TSi” version. Huddersfield so £60 on the train.

My lad (17) had his own money and bought a civic type s - £1500 insurance with black box. His stats are looking good and hoping for cheaper renewal. He was insured as a learner but cheaper quote for full licence from another provider.

We’re buying the car for him but he’s paying his insurance so we were worried he wouldn’t be able to afford it.

He’s got £1500 saved up and is aiming for having £2k set aside as a buffer.

Hopefully Greig doesn't mind if I ask a related car cost Q

in UK, how do you find out what cars are cheap/free for road tax?
You need to buy a car that is pre 2019 to get cheap road tax, for petrol anyway. My wife had a 2016 Citigo (small 1 litre car) that was £30. Replaced in 2019 with same model and road tax was about 5 times the cost.

You can check on the government website to tell you the tax details for specific models.
As Ken says, it is a bit of a minefield as my 2014 diesel was £20 a year, swapped it for a 24 plate hybrid and it is now £195. The government realised they were losing money by letting electric vehicles pay nothing so prices have gone up massively in recent years.

Don’t forget the companies that do multi car policies. The only thing toeing you together is the same address, so he would earn his own no claims. You could save a tidy sum.

We’re with Admiral multicar at the moment. Their quote was around £1k (with telematics) as a standalone. When I spoke to them they reckoned there wouldn’t be much movement on that even as a multicar addition.

I am in Fife but the car I saw had no local equivalent and savings aren’t really my goal. A train down and drive back will maybe add £100 on to it so not really significant on a £12k spend.
Don't know the cost but have you looked into a flight to Bristol Airport and a bus to Weston. It's more of a day trip. I believe you can also get the AA to carry out an inspection and give a report.
