Young driver insurance… demystify the mystic

As some of you may know I work in Insurance. My son is now 19 and almost been driving for a year. Insurance was around £1,300 with a blackbox. Prices varied, it depends on the car, male or female, the area you live in, the theft rating of the area and the car, where you keep the car overnight.

Boys cost more than girls, 17 is more than 18, 1 year without claims makes a big difference. The value of the car makes less difference than some imagine. Having parents on as second and 3rd drivers will reduce the premium as it decreases the risk slightly. Always have the son / daughter as the main driver and earn the ncb.

£1,500 will be enough, £2,000 will be a nice safety net, don't mod the car, don't get too powerful a car, it's not just about the pose and speed, it's about the safety of them and others.

Use a reputable insurer and check the claims service reviews, be surprising how some of them are really poor.

My son bought his own Peugeot 307 59 plate, he's had some scrapes in it and it's a little tatty looking but it's perfect for him, it's his 1st car not the crown jewels
