Brought my balls in from the garage and putting them under the stairs decided to count how many I've got. I have bought so many over the last 12mths I feel that I wont need any now for at least another 12mths.

So my questions are these:-

1. Is it wrong having 288 balls!? Or do some of you have more than that?
2. Do you lot have about 10 different makes of balls or do you have one ball and stick with it?

BTW - Yes, i am bored and waiting for the Mrs to wake up.

1). no its not wrong having that many ball but it may be an idea to start using some of them, especially as a ball only has so much shelf life, imo, especially when being kept in a garage, or boot of a car, where it can be cold.

2). I don't think I've ten brands of ball, though I do experiment occasionally when something new or interesting comes along. so probably have more than I ought. As convention dictates that we really ought to stick to one ball type/make. Once you like a ball stick with it in general.

Post script). Try using up some of the naffer cheaper balls over what remains of the winter season, & then try & slowly use up the other balls over the rest of the season, trying to stay with a type at a time, where the feel is the same or similar.

A guy I play with carries 60 in his bag all the time and he carries his bag too. I have about a dozen match balls in my bag and 20 duffers in the garage.

Ouch...! (SIXTY....!) how many does he loose in a round. Talk about being pesemistic or planning to fail.

I've occasionally carried twenty in a bag & that is heavy enough, though plan to use far less than that. None of us should really need more than a dozen for an average round even where water & a lot of rough comes into play.

Just got myself 5 boxes of various in AG, and given 3 off Santa, should last me until the end of Jan.

Got two boxes of the Jack Nicklaus soft "tour feel" balls, anyone tried them? only paid £7 for 12 and they feel good in the hand.

Crikey the only time I've seen someone with that many balls was on the 8th tee @ Monte Mayor where the "looky looky" man was making a killing, anyone who has played there will know that they are needed.

Max 12 in my bag at any one time. Practice bag full of about 100 odds & sods.

about 12 in the bag, normally all the same, although if I find a decent one it'll stay in. I dont collect balls really, if I find a crap one I will either give it away or flop it into a pond.

Nope I try to stick to one make of ball (Titliest)

I'm worried about your obsession with balls Peter, have you seen anyone about it?

I have a huge number of brand new balls in the wardrobe (not sure exactly how many haven't counted). I can see at least 2 dozen TP black, a dozen Cally Tour 1X, 5 dozen Pro V, a dozen Srixon URC, a dozen Nike Platinum (thanks GM and another dozen on the way). That is all I can see at first glance but I'm pretty sure there are more tucked further inside so I may go and do a proper inventory later.

As for the number of balls carried, I usually have a dozen with me of which I carry two in my pocket (one in play and a provisional).

I think you should select one ball you want to play and flog all the rest while they're still worth something i.e before all the models change.

For consistency, particuarly with chipping and putting you need to play one ball.

Ebayers pay decent money for top balls, use the cash from the sales to buy a couple of dozen of your one ball of choice. ;)

Wise words from Birdieman.

Get to know the one type of ball, you will soon be able to tell how it will react to a certain type of shot. On the green you will know how you have hit the putt by the feel of the ball off the face. That's how you put good scores together.

You wouldn't go to play with a bag of odd clubs so why play with matched clubs and odd balls ?

Dozen in my bag, after a round or 1/2 round balls are binned into practice bag, when I get down to 3 in my bag, I top up from my stock, if my stock level drops to couple of boxes (3-ball that is) I re-stock.

All the other varied balls I have from, trials, gifts etc I take them to the range sooner or later, from a distance it looks real cool dropping 50 brand new balls out of a practice bag, till you go close and see they are all those chrismas gift balls we all love to get. Im doing this soon with a box of dunlops when I take my lad out :p

I hear what Brendy is saying about choosing one ball and sticking to it but all of the balls I have are premium range balls and as such there is very little to choose amongst them. I am not looking to reopen the whole which ball is best debate so please don't go down that road. All I am saying is that granted some are slightly firmer around the greens than others but in overall terms perform pretty much the same.

To be honest I have not been a huge e-bay fan and never really got into the whole buying and selling thing on there but my next door neighbour lives for it so I might get her to put some up there. Alternatively I might go to the post office and find the p&p cost and then work out a price to sell them on here

Gonna have to disagree Homer, using only one type of ball will be another step to finding your perfect bag. Ball fitting is the new thing that is becoming available as part of the custom fit options.

Whilst all the balls you have are premium range they are all quite different. I'm a ProV1-x user and have no desire to change but as I had 3 Callaway tour ix given to me I gave them a whirl in a knockabout, they were noticeably "clickier" off the club face when chipping and putting and did not spin anywhere near as much as my usual choice. Apparently this is because Phil Mickelson, who helped develop them, likes his ball to be that way.

The important thing is to find a ball that is right for YOU not just because it's £11 a sleeve so must be good.
