Yardages

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm going to try and get down to the club tomorrow and have this done if I have time, if not it will have to be during the week. I'll post my results once I have them. Oh and someone mentioned about being able to drive it 300 yards, I'd say that's about right for me when they go straight and get a decent roll, although my longest drive to date is 370 yards with quite a strong following wind and a really firm fairway. It was a par 5 and I was hitting my 9 iron into the green for my second shot, which of course I hit straight into the water. Distance isnt really a problem for me, Now if only I could get the direction part right!!

I would need to see that...I play with some of the best players in east lothian, scratch, plus one and two, county players, ex pros and the like. Dont know any of them that can hit 300 on average. 260 270 280 yes. down wind 300 plus yes.

I wouldn't say I hit it 300 on average, I'm not consistent enough for that but when I catch one right and it goes straight then 300 is about right. For instance the 18th at our place is 303 yards and I've driven the green plenty of times. Of course conditions play a part in that as well. I'd say my average hit is a good 270. I'd also be the first to admit that being able to hit it a long way means nothing if your not accurate, which I'm not on a consistent basis. I guess I'll get an actual reading when I go for the Trackman session as its possible I'm over estimating of course.

What shaft have you got powering those irons?
Are you a low hcp? Sorry for prying but would seem a waste not to be with those yardages.

Err my irons are the stock shafts that come with the cobra S3 irons I think. I had a custom fitting and was hitting the 7 iron 175 yards according to the launch monitor. My driver was second hand so I have no idea what shaft it has unfortunately. I've only just got my first ever handicap and it's 16. Just to add I'm 6'3" and quite strong if that makes any difference to distances?

Errr what flex are the shafts?

Ok I was being stupid there and just assuming they would be regular (stock) as it wasn't discussed at the fitting. Having just looked at my irons it says N.S.PRO 1030H "R" which I assume means it's regular? I'm not particularly clued up about this kind of thing I'm afraid.

Thanks Andy - do you nearly hit passing planes? By my reckoning hitting a regular that hard (150 yrds) would result in massive amounts of spin and a high hook - does this describe your shot?

I hit the ball very high and it's something that gets mentioned every time I play with someone new, I have been pulling them left recently but not in a hook shape, more of a closed face straight pull left? My longer irons (4/5) and woods tend to slice though. Also I don't think I get loads of spin, maybe because I think I "sweep" the ball rather than hit down on it? I can't be sure though as I've never seen my own swing, I'll definitely get it filmed this week and post it on here as I think I'm confusing myself now.

Personally I get out on the practise ground and hit 11 balls (use the same as you play with), I then measure the distance using a measuring wheel to the central ball. I do this for the summer and have just done it for winter as distance drops off dramatically in the cold. Repeat for each club in the bag and record in a notebook, job done!!

My 9 iron 115 yards (carry). 150yards wow I wish!!

I wouldn't mind a Trackman session just to get my carries. Getting an overall yardage is easy enough. I go to a flat section of my course and hit a few. Then use the Golfmentor app on the iphone.
