Hi everyone,

Just wondered......,

Is the cocking of wrists during the back swing a natural occurrence or should I be making a conscience effort to make this move.

If the later, when in the backswing should this action occur?

Thanks for any help.

It should be natural, but with my new swing change I have to make a conscious effort to cock my wrists (until it becomes natural). By the time my arm is horizontal to the ground, I try and have the club pointing vertical.

I'm looking into this very thing at the moment. I never paid any attention to it until my pro spotted that I was hardly "trying" at all and suggested I tried to actively think about it more. He wanted me to take the club back to 9 o'clock then aggressively cock the wrists.
Yesterday, I was doing this and trying to get even more as I finished my backswing....when I can feel it, it works impressively.
In answer to your question, my understanding is it can happen sooner or later than 9 o'clock, as long as it does.
Some of the girls don't even start breaking their wrists 'till much later.

See if this works

There is a full sequence of Sergio further down the page. One might "expect" to see a 90 degree angle between left arm and club shaft by 9 o'clock...but no way Jose. It isn't until the 6th or 7th picture that he gets fully "set". He then increases it...look at picture 10!! This is what I have none of in my swing.....sadly...... :)

I think the point at when the wrists start to break is quite an important consideration.
Players such as Nicklaus and particularly Norman who have a classical swing break there wrists much later in the swing and are only full cocked just before the top of the back swing.
Nick Faldo is the typical modern swinger of the golf club with his wrist being fully cocked at or soon after horizontal or 9 oclack.
Tiger Woods has some elements of both swing styles and as a result his wrist break start in between these two positions.
As a rule I would say that the modern swing with the early wrist break is more suited to most players particularly the older or less flexible ones amongst us.
The classic swing or that of tigers is therefore better for youngsters and does as a rule produce more power.
I originally had a totally natural classic swing, then I learnt the Faldo swing and with a few changes about 12 years ago adopted ( or should I say attempted) some of the Tigers swing mechanics as I believe the blending of the classic and modern styles to produces a powerful reliable swing.
Now I am getting back into the game I am thinking that now could be the time to start adjusting my swing to one that will suit the older player.
I know I’m “only” 42 and still strong and flexible but a few minor changes in the nearish future is on the cards.
So my answer to your question there are many places in your swing that the wrist break can start and you should think about what swing style you have or what player you would like to emulate and think about your age and physique.
The take away has a huge influence on the swing and in practice you could reach extension with no wrist break as with Norman or plenty of wrist break with the back of your hand parallel to the target line as with Faldo, you can of course just let it happen as some have said but you did ask the question.
Cheers
