I've had a bit of a Eureka moment. I've realised that I don't allow my wrists to turn over enough as I go through the ball on full shots, but have too much wrist action when chipping. I sort of fall between the two stools! On full shots this sometimes causes me to block or even shank shots to the right, while my chipping leaves a lot to be desired.

I have always had a fear of snap hooking (my other really bad shot), but allowing my wrists to roll over, if anything, seems to encourage a slight fade. For chipping I am now just pre-setting my wrists and keeping them relatively stiff.

Sorry Del but this just sounds like yet another swing thought to add to the hundreds you sound like you have to counteract all the bad ones you struggle with. Hit it, find it and hit it and let it flow

Don't like the sound of that. What you seem to be doing is getting rid of the lag in your swing. My understanding is that you have to maintain lag as long as possible & that the weight of the rapidly moving clubhead automatically brings the face square at impact. Think you're barking up the wrong tree.

Agree with the others that this isn't a good thought. What it will do is increase your inconsistency imo.

On the good days when you're timing is on it will feel great.
On the bad days when you don't quite get it right you won't have a clue which side you're going to miss. Not a good feeling, trust me.

I too tried that fix Delc and it worked for a while but eventually it was just as bad as before.

Then I found this

Swing thoughts when playing? Not a good idea.

The best I've ever played is when I've banned all swing thoughts from my head during a round and just thought about what I want to do instead.

Obviously you have time the wrist roll so that the clubhead makes a swish as it goes through the hitting area. I played very nicely this morning, with no blocks or shanks to the right. I had noticed that after practising chipping before a round, I often blocked my tee tee shot at the 1st out to the right, which is not a good idea because there is a lake there! It's really about sorting out the difference between a full swing and a chipping swing.

Wow! You are complete mess with a zillion thoughts for various shots!!!

FWIW. As a rightee, I try to ensure that, in my through-swing my right forearm is straight and above my left one. This is the 'reverse' of how my backswing finishes - with left wrist 'over' my right. This does not actually involve 'rolling the wrists' but is merely a reflection of what my torso/shoulders has/have done! The 'bad' manipulation that I occasionally do is the 'hold off' which means that the club-face is open and a high fade/slice is the result!

Again FWIW, my mate has precisely the opposite problem to me - his bad shot is an 'active wrist' hook!

Try reading Ben Hogan's 'Five Lessons' or the Leslie King tutorials!

For the record, I have been informed by a number of teaching pros that my grip is very good and very orthodox! 😎

Same here delc, sounds like you are going down the same road I did.

I find now I can leave the face open at impact and get a nice draw as the club is squared by good body turn and not wrist. I keep lots of lag and find the middle of the face more.

I even did something I have rarely done with my old way, I hit a ball clean out of a fairway bunker. Even more amazing was I almost holed it, a full 8 iron!

Give the video a try and see if it works, keep your old face position first too, don't combine the video with a wristy roll!

Strong right hand at a guess?

You seem to have failed to recognise/register the stress I put on 'only'!

And the entire downswing - if not complete swing - depends in 'timing'! Though it's termed 'sequencing' in golf swing terminology - at least these days!

I had the same eureka moment earlier this year, it was mint whilst it lasted. however since I got fitted for me new bats at Ping he showed me how to hit the ball straighter and more consistent. Which does not include much wrist action at all.
Now there in lies a problem for me. if wrist action is fundamental in generating more club head speed = distance, how can it be incorporated into my swing without screwing up my straight drives.

If you roll your wrists over, effectively closing the face, how does that produce a fade?
I had a tendency to lead too much with my hands and arms, so sometimes the club head got a bit left behind and on a too much in to out swing path. At best this caused a slight draw or a block to the right. At worst a shank or a complete miss-hit. Allowing my wrists to turn over gives a more straight through swing path.

hold both arms just relaxed in front of you palms facing thumbs pointing up (assuming rh golfer)
with the left hand move your wrist only to point the thumb back towards you then with the wrist only move it back back to straight relaxed where it started from and then just past a tad so wrist feels stretched little ways

that first motion thumb back to towards you is how the lead wrist moves when it sets in the backswing
the second motion on moving back and a fraction past where it started is what happen at impact when the lead wrist 'releases'
this is the motion that helps to square the face up and produce optimum chs

go back to the very start position both arms relaxed out in front but this time with the right hand/wrist don't make the motion you just did with the lead (left) hand/wrist but instead hinge the right hand back on itself so the palm starts to face away from you that's the motion the right hand/wrist makes in the backswing but then coming into impact there's still some of that hinge angle remaining at strike and right hand/wrist doesn't get back to straight inline with the right forearm until the follow through after the strike

the movement the lead (left) hand/wrist makes in 'setting' and 'releasing' is exactly the same as if you had a hammer in the left hand and were making the motion with the hand only to tap a nail in
