Would you pay £350 to play Royal Lytham?

Luckily I've played some of the more expensive courses (Wentworth, Sunningdale, Royal St George's etc) when they were quite a lot more reasonable. I wouldn't shell out to play any one of the courses who've just ramped up their green fees to ridiculous proportions. I do see more clubs advertising memberships and reduced green fees etc I just wonder if golf is heading for a slow return to the pre covid days given the cost involved in playing. Some of the members at mine are saying that it

At the end of the day, when you're an old man and can't play golf anymore, what are you going to sit and tell the grandkids, that you've played the same course as Jack Nicholas, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Rory McIlroy, or that you got a good deal on a couple of courses in Spain with flights and BnB included for the same price.

If you want to play them you've got to pay the fee.

wants to go to Pebble
So I managed to coral the grandchildren and get their i pads off them, and managed to get their attention by duct taping to a chair. I started telling them about iconic golf courses, but they shouted for their mam who told me to let them go and stop being nasty.

I don't, I won't.

Magic, when are we going ;)

Yes. Golfers are very lucky to have the accesbility to play the majority of top courses around the world, only a few are beyond reach of us working class folk.

Is Lytham the course that is surrounded by houses? If so, I wouldn’t play there but for that money find a “better” full experience open rota course.

Carnoustie is similar in terms of views.

Yes. My son playing in a football tournament in Blackpool a few years ago and I discovered the course was a 2 mile walk away. Thoroughly bored by the tournament, if you've done enough you'll know, off I went. Very nice area, big houses, big old trees. I just walked in, no grand driveway or gate to get through. Had a wander around the practice putting green, stood behind the first tee, peaked at the many bunkers. Quite an unassuming course really. One that probably is harder to play, more impressive when you play rather than how it looks at first sight.

Where is Royal Lytham ranked as courses go in England?
It wouldn’t personally bother me paying that sort of money if the course was worth it, also depends who you’re playing with, for me, I love playing great courses with my Dad and brother.

Preferences are so personal but I would have it streets ahead of Woodall Spa, and certainly ahead of Hoylake — It’s for me on a par with Birkdale and Deal, and a touch behind RSG

Royal Portrush £385, Royal Co.Down £425. We played Portrush with a member for £15 in the week after the 2019 Open. The stands were still in place and the weather fantastic for there, what a bargain😮.

I noticed that Lytham hasn't hosted the Open since 2012, and isn't confirmed for a future event. Anyone know what is going on?

Looking at the history books it used to regularly host the Open, during the 60s - 80s it was hosting it almost every 5 years.

A quick google on the local paper suggests it is still an option but they do not have the spare space required for the tented village that accompanies an Open now. Spectator space is also 'tight'. Not ruled out, but there are other options that offer more, seems to be the feeling.

Not been there, it looks quite hemmed in on google maps, but no more than Hoylake.

I've been to Birkdale and RSG and there is a lot more space at those courses.

A course surrounded by houses would have me shaking like a dog on every tee, throw that price in and I wouldn't enjoy it.

Its the beauty of Golf though we get to play at the equivilent of Wembley, Lords or Wimbledon if we want to, and i bet if you asked a football fan if they wanted to play their sunday league game at wembley for £350 they would bite your hand off.

That's a really good way of thinking about it. And a football match is only 90 mins ;)

:ROFLMAO: Some of the courses I've played in Spain have housing right in the slicer zone. I always assume that a golfer would never buy one of those properties.

There's no chance of hitting houses at Lytham. Thick rough and trees before you get to the boundary. Although I've heard it's possible to slice it on to the railway on the first few holes.

Thomas the Tank engine better watch out then.

I've paid $300+ before when I played Teeth of the Dog in the Dom Rep, plenty of balls ended up in the ocean.
