Would you join a club that did not have a dress code?

Do you miss the discussion bit about wearing hats indoors?
Surely it wouldn’t be difficult to leave your hat on the table, walk in, get your round, walk out, put your hat back on!

Of course it isn't, but why the hell is anybody offended by a hat. Amazing that a large part of the political debate is around the rights of others to be offended or otherwise by words that actually may detrimentally effect people in their daily lives, and here we are on a golf forum talking about people being offended by a hat warn indoors. We really do need to get some perspective and try to see how the outside world sees us.

They aren’t offended by a hat, they are offended by the person ignoring their Dress Code.

Change hat for any other item that contravenes their rules.

Phones in the clubhouse is not something I like.
More specifically phones in public places.
I find it annoying when people are having a phone call and think everyone else in the vicinity needs to hear it as well.
Texts or whatever no problem at all but if you need to Speak please go outside or somewhere where you won’t be impacting on other peoples conversations.
And you don’t need to shout just cause you’re on the phone!.

Is it just a case with a lot of dress codes that nobody at clubs has taken the time to rewrite them for 50 years or more so they just stay the same.

Several decades ago my dad was a headteacher in Mansfield.
He was approached by several members of staff raising the serious issue of girls breaching the school dress code by wearing trousers.
He asked if anyone could come up with a reasonable argument why girls shouldn’t be allowed to wear trousers. They couldn’t. He changed the dress code.
But that was an institution performing a compulsory legal function, not a recreational amateur sports club, so it obviously didn’t take itself anywhere near so seriously.

I do not respect "rules" that are daft, outdated or wrong.

I don't think I've ever worn a hat in our bar or lounge at the golf course. Or at any other golf course. Just not in the habit or not made that choice - yet.
I have seen it done at my club a few times - wearing a hat in the lounge. Really could not see a problem for anyone as a consequence.

No I wouldn't join a club without a dress code. If I want to drink with people wearing caps I'll go to the local pub.
I'm on committee at my club, last year we reviewed the dress code and the members were overwhelmingly in favour of keeping it. My club is quite 'posh' and members like that. We regard it as somewhere we can bring people and show it off. Very rare for anyone to be seen in a cap in our clubhouse, 99% of the time it is a visitor and a club official or employee will politely remind them to remove it. Never an issue.
But if clubs want to allow it that's fine by me. I may play at those clubs from time to time but I wouldn't join.

The rule would have been put in place when it was seen as good etiquette and manners to remove your hat when inside

If the Syrup is ill fitting and doesn’t move when you turn your head then I might have to say something.
Either that or I’ll be in fits of laughter.
I won’t judge you or criticise you for wearing one though.
Be great if it was a really good one and I didn’t realise you were wearing one until we got to the bar and you took it off and just left it on the table

If I was at your club I would respect the rule and remove my cap.
I wouldn’t however ask someone to remove theirs if they hadn’t done.

"Rules", in terms of what we are discussing here, are opinions.

"The earth is a flat disc at the centre of a universe created by god" is an opinon.

I do not respect opinions ("rules") that are wrong.
But, I suppose, people are allowed to hold such opinions and I am allowed to view those opinions as wrong.

Am I the only person that isn’t even sure if their clubhouse has a dress code, let alone exactly what it is?

There’s a sign saying no golf shoes in the bar, but unless you’re clumping in a load of mud (avoiding this is the intention of the rule I think) it is literally impossible to tell a modern golf shoe and a trainer apart so obviously entirely unenforceable.

Nobody has shouted at me or thrown me out yet so either my normal clothes are fine, or there are some sticklers in the corner silently seething at me .

EDIT: I actually went and checked on the website as this thread made me curious. No non-religious headwear for me, or flip flops or tracksuits amongst other vague and slightly silly things (define a walking shoe…?). Maybe it’s posher than I thought, although I’m fairly sure it’s not particularly enforced .

I suggest that the next time you go to the pub to get drunk you do it in Scotland as being drunk in a pub in England and Wales is against the law.

Sounds like the rules at your club need to be updated to match the members and officials.

Why not? It is every members' responsibility to uphold the club rules. Unless of course you are referring to being a visitor at said course.
