Would you join a club that did not have a dress code?

Maybe take it off when you’ve finished playing, just like you do your glove or shoes (that can’t be worn indoor) etc

Put your hat in your car or in your bag.

If your up north anytime you’re more than welcome for a round at our place, you’d love it, wear what you like in the clubhouse.

I'm pretty sure my club has relaxed the no hat rule anyway since the old bar steward left and was replaced by his much younger assistant. Can't recall anyone being told off for it in a long while now.

But we still don’t allow Football shirts to be worn while playing, or cargo shorts.

I can actually answer your rhetorical question, well Kind of I can. We’ve had a lot of studies done through work about changing certain protocols, mannerisms and potentially outdated ideas. I still have the report we were sent about it’s extremely dull and long to read.

1. By dropping rigid rules, we make social spaces more inclusive.

2. Old fashion manners focus on action rather than feeling.

Basically said that old school manners and actions were scripted to make us predictable, fit enforced social constructs and behave in a way we were “told” is acceptable rather than what we actually feel acceptable and being accepted for who we are as individuals.

The outcome was that if you shift from "Scripted" to "Spirit." We lose the predictable structure of years gone by, but we gain respect that is earned through character rather than memorised gestures.

LOTS of studies . I’m 100% imagining that the MoD hired a series of “consultants” that looked like a cross between a 60s hippy and Swampy to write all this flowing touchy-feely new age stuff about a bunch of squaddies not following set rules and just doing what feels good instead. I’m sure that works brilliantly when operating a military unit, and it seems such a better use of funds than spending them on aircraft carriers and tanks and stuff .

Yes I have, unless you can't read? If you're sitting outside the clubhouse with hat on, you pop in to buy some drinks, there should be absolutely no need to take it off so you just leave it where it is while you buy your drinks and carry them back outside. As I said earlier, you're applying the intention to the wrong side of the argument. Maybe I'm not articulating what I mean very well. But the action would be to physically remove the hat, and that is where I'd say there is 'no need'.

Plus, if we go one level higher, having 'no need' to wear the hat inside is not reason enough to make an actual RULE about it. There's also no need to wear your outside coat indoors but nobody made a rule about that. There's no need to wear a jacket and tie while eating but they made rules saying you have to! Yes I'm aware I already said that one but it beared repeating.

We re did ours 2 years ago and we still ask for hats/caps to be removed in the clubhouse . Denim OK in the clubhouse but not on the course or practice facilities.
Shirts if so designed can be un tucked.

I have no problem with what any clubs decides and happy to abide by their rules.
I just wonder how many clubs do review or update their rules.
Good on your club for doing it.

To be fair though mate you are ginger so you should be made to wear a hat indoors and out.

Actually no you’re incorrect. These studies are often done by staff officers , doing promotional studies for their next level
Leadership qualifications for promotion whilst in staff colleges. This one was very much done in house but whilst reaching out to industry and in conjunction with several universities. So people were doing their daily jobs and no outside grants or funds required

I mean anything that can have a positive impact on the running of a military unit or in life in general is only a good thing. Also removing the red tape and pointless niceties does often lead to operational output and improvement.

As for funding on Tanks, Aircraft carriers or air platforms none of that budget or funds is set by the military, trust me we wish it was as there’s a lot we need badly. Those funds come from the government who pass it down to MOD, MOD poorly written contracts are done very much at political and civil servant level in turn down to the grunts on the ground, by which time we don’t get what’s needed or VFM. So any issues with how money is spent needs to be aimed at the likes of 2 Tier Kier and his minions etc but that’s a whole different discussion and not one for a golf club dress code debate

Plus I think that, for a members club in particular, adhering to a dress code is a very simple and relatively easy way of showing respect to a club - and indicates to me that when on the course an individual is then more likely to respect the course (repairing/tidying pitch marks, divots, bunkers etc) and other players (noise, speed of play, letting through etc).

Would I join a club with absolutely no dress code? Yes…but it’d have to be an absolute cracking course; the only pragmatic option, or pretty much the last resort.

Phones in the clubhouse is not something I like.
More specifically phones in public places.
I find it annoying when people are having a phone call and think everyone else in the vicinity needs to hear it as well.
Texts or whatever no problem at all but if you need to Speak please go outside or somewhere where you won’t be impacting on other peoples conversations.
And you don’t need to shout just cause you’re on the phone!.

I'm going to guess that, at 100% of clubs, having a dress code or not doesn't show itself to alter the number of unrepaired pitch marks, unraked bunkers and unreplaced divots...
