Don't see the difference...

They're both examples of cheating, granted. My point was that one is subtle, one blatant, and I was rather surprised that anyone should have to ask whether we condone cheating at all, never mind blatant cheating.

I'm not saying there are no cheats out there, but there is a difference between nudging your ball into a better lie in the rough and not counting a missed tap in when it comes to degrees of blatancy!

And I'm not sure there are "plenty" out there who would do the same. If the current state of the poll is indicative, around 2%

No difference at all, a bad lie can cost you more than 1 shot...

Exactly the reason why competitions should ALWAYS be drawn.
Too many cheats and too many golfers who don't know the rules.
I make a point of trying to play with different people in every comp, as my club have allocated tee times, and not drawn groups.

This is one of the best posts on here... This is what the amateur game needs. No one would let a fellow competitor cheat but mates would often turn a blind eye.

The example in the OP said the other player had his backed turned and didn't see the missed putt, so drawn or not wouldn't have mattered

Cheating is cheating

Have a read through the posts on this thread, we are not only discussing the incident, we are also discussing cheating and ignorance of the rules.
If a cheat plays with like minded people, then its possible that they'd turn a blind eye whether they'd seen the incident or not.

Ooooh, reading the posts, that's a good idea before replying, why didn't I think of that ;)

Sorry, it wasn't clear what post you were replying to so I assumed the OP. However, on the general subject of cheating, I agree, drawn is better. The number of rule interpretations I have come across by people who "always do that in our group" is frankly astounding.

Right the question... Yesterday I was playing in a stableford comp and missed a 15-20 cm putt by trying to one hand tap it in. Now my playing partner had his back turned and wouldn't have known otherwise as he would never of expected me to miss it. Anyway I called it as I hate cheating and would hate a false HCP cut. It was on the 10th hole and was after shooting 21 points on the front and to be honest it knocked the stuffing out of me. Now a lot of people I have spoken to have said like hell would they call it which gives me even less faith in the amateur game than I already had.

The poll is private so be honest, would you have called it?

I can see why people thought you were considering not "calling it".

Saying "anyway" you decided to call it sounds like you "bit the bullet" etc when really all you were doing was adding up your shots.

Talk of a false cut is a bit strange also. You write down the correct score and that sorts itself out.

I was simply explaining what had happened and there was never any thought of not calling it. It was my 3rd comp ever and cheating is not in my make-up. I can see why it may of come across different but I was also rushing the OP as I had messed up the poll and had posted yes or no with no question to the poll so had to quickly edit it. I was simply trying to set the scene.

I've also said in a previous post that a .1 hadn't been added to my HCP after a N/R a few weeks back so I went and asked them to apply it for me. My HCP will be as true as it gets and I wouldn't want it any other way. I don't enter comps to win them as there are too many cheats and rule breakers and bandits in this game to compete against. I play against myself and a HCP cut will be a win to me.

One example of extremely good scoring and coming no where in a comp... We played with a lad off 2 in comp recently and he shot -4 for 42 points I think it was. His position out of 20 or so players was 4th I thought a HCP was your very best. How can 3 other players shoot above 42 points on the same comp on a windy day also.

I'm never bothered about winning comps either, just want to get my HCP reduced. I'd like to win of course (and I'd love to be on here tomorrow night saying I had lol) but my first goal is getting the HCP down.

Not counting the stroke is the thin end of the wedge. After that you will be not counting missed 4 foot putts. Then not counting drives out of bounds. Before you know it people who can't drive or putt will be knocking 28 shots of their score and people who can drive and putt won't be knocking any off. Then one day someone knocking 28 shots off will get a few putts that they don't normally get and still knock 28 shots off. This will mean they 'win' the competition.

Surly no one wants golf competitions to become such an immoral farce.

If we are not careful some daft sod will write it into the rules that you don't have to count all your shots. How mad would that be?

Well done on counting the shot on the 10th. And well done for your 12 points on the front 9. Pity about the 9 shots you didn't count. But you are only cheating yourself................and better players out of their rightful winnings.

Again we have a simpleton who hasn't understood the reason for the post

You don't "call" a stroke that should have gone in but didn't.
You just count it.

And yes, I have called a penalty shot on myself three times for infringements that my playing partners didn't see.
I really should be more careful!

LOL........I love irony.

The point of my post was to show the different moral reasoning. If you had not counted the shot on the 10th you would be a cheat, because it is against the rules. But the reason you would feel guilty or ashamed of yourself is because of the morality, not the rules. Our morality should dictate the rules not the other way round.

If you had not counted the shot and won, you would have no satisfaction from the win (you cheated yourself). You would also feel guilty because you stopped someone else from winning (you cheated them).

If there was a rule that said:- if daveyboy misses a short put on the 10th hole he doesn't have to count it. Would you now get satisfaction from the win or would you question the morality of the rule? Can you justify why you don't have to count a missed putt when others do.

I suspect you would have the same moral outrage as in your op and still count the shot.

But this rule doesn't exist. The actual rule allows you to not count 17 shots. What is the moral justification of you not counting 17 shots that you actually took when other people can't?
