I wouldn't have called it, I also carry an extra ball in my pocket and often change 7's to 6's on my card ;)

Seriously though I reckon 20% of the field cheat, some by clear cheating and the rest by playing to their own set of rules.

Anyway I called it as I hate cheating

I'm wondering, what do you mean "I called it". There is nothing to call, you just took one more shot than you thought. And for the other post to say "you're only cheating yourself"....I would say, you're cheating everyone.

My idea of calling something is like when you forget to put your ball back after moving it a putter head away, calling it when you move the ball in the rough, calling it if you move the ball a little when addressing it...thats calling a penalty. There is nothing to call if you are just counting the shots you took to put the ball in the hole. If you are talking about cheating alone, then thats different. If you get my drift.

Many months back in a comp I hit the green in one on the 18th (par 3) and then my following putt rested on the lip.
I stepped up, initially aired it and then tapped it in in anger.
I signed my card and on the way home, going over my score in my head, realised my opponent had "given" me it for 3.
I rang the pro and got myself DQ'd and claimed I'd misinformed my partner.

Ive aired a shot that no ones seen, hit a shot about a foot in rough that no ones seen and found my ball in a divot that no ones seen.
How can you go home and say to yourself "I shot X today" knowing you're lying?

its the same as when you send a ball into the next postcode off the tee. you might play your next up a different fairway if you can. you might not see your playing partners for 2/3/4 god forbid 5 shots, but you will always tell them how many shots you took.

Of course you call it just like any other infringement, otherwise you might as well just sit in the bar and make a score up, hopefully there is still some personal integrity left in amateur sport

I cant see why anyone wouldnt...no wait of course i would see WHY SOME would, your only cheating yourself in the end

i had something similar two years ago i had a put of about 2 feet and hit it so hard it done a 180 and came back to me almost to where the original putt was.

my opponent asked if i was going to hit as he hadnt seen it, i told him what happened, he had already marked me as a 4....already so had to change it

I still managed a cut that day but wouldnt have felt good about myself if i had cheated to get it

Absolutely call it - otherwise you are lying to yourself and to what real end - it's only a game. In life being dishonest to yourself - even if only on little things such as this - has you on the road to rack and ruin. If you cannot be honest with yourself then honesty with others is at stake.

A friend of mine once missed a 2-inch putt through lack of concentration - he waved the putter in the general direction of the ball and missed it altogether. When I said that counts as a shot, he said he was 'practising'. Who on earth needs to practise their 2-inch putts?!

TBH, I can't believe you have started a poll on this, are you really expecting people to admit to cheating in public? There may be some that wouldn't call it but I very much doubt they would own up to it in your poll. Private or not, I'm sure there will be people that can see the results of the poll.

Regardless of the game I was playing, comp or not I would call that. If only to teach myself a valuable lesson!
