I disagree. What set it apart was the lack of payment but that Olympic medal. Always used to be seen as the pinnacle and Bolt has gone on record as saying they meant more than his world records or world titles
Bolt was sponsored as an athlete from the age of 16 and has never had a job, he’s a professional athlete.

Easy to say the Olympic medal means more when you’re a multi-millionaire.

The days of someone working 40-50hrs a week in a job and winning an Olympic medal are long gone, bar the very rare exception.

Go back to the likes of Alan Wells or Daley Thompson when funding for British athletes was paltry especially compared to today or compared to other nations at the time. Read about how much it meant to them to win their medals and be known as an Olympic champion

The world has changed when it comes to most sports and money is big reason , it’s big for countries to win gold medals and the IOC and each countries own Olympic boards market the players massively to bring in funds

When Bolt won he earned a fortune , just as every single big athlete, just as an Olympics earns a fortune

Someone now to win a medal or compete has to be a full time athlete

A guy I used to coach is part of the Olympic hockey squad , he is also in RAF but is pretty much a full time athlete now

😂😂 why not go back to 1924 and Eric Liddell who refused to run in the Olympic Final because it was on a sunday and that was the “Lord’s Day”, Olympic medal didn’t mean much to him!

Fact is, you used Bolt as your example and now you’re going back to the 70’s & 80’s to find examples.

Times have changed and Olympic athletes can’t compete at the highest levels these days without final support and rewards.
